5 Simple Ways to Show Your Partner That They’re Appreciated

When you’re raising children with someone, you count on them for a lot. You need them to be reliable and responsible and parent in a way that’s consistent with how you parent. You also probably need them to pick up milk on their way home, do the dishes each night, and take the trash out every week. When they forget a task or don’t do something the way you would it’s easy to see – the kids don’t have anything to drink at breakfast, the dishes pile up, or the dog knocks over the over-filled trashcan and makes a huge mess. When they do everything right, though, it’s easy to miss since life just happens as it should (not always smoothly but without any major hiccups). This fall, when life gets busy with school and sports and the beginning of planning for holiday events, take the time to look for the times your partner is great and try out the little ways below to show them how much you appreciate them.

1. Do a chore that’s normally theirs

When you take the time to do something that’s normally your partner’s chore you’re really giving them the ability to spend their time doing something they find relaxing. Next time you have a few minutes (even if you’ve been going all day!) consider spending it giving back to your spouse.

2. Let them pick the movie … or the meal or the activity

Letting your partner chose how you’ll spend your time together shows them that you value their enjoyment and that, no matter what you’re doing, you’re simply happy to be doing it with them.

3. Write it down

Most partners tell each other they love one another at several points throughout the day such as when one person is leaving for work, before hanging up the phone, or as they close their eyes at night. At these times though there’s not often a lot a lot of time to share exactly why you love them. Everyone loves being told what makes them great so, next time you have a chance, write your partner a quick note. It doesn’t have to be a perfectly scripted love letter. Slip in in their pocket, lunch box, or bag as they head out the door. Your affection is sure to bring a mid-day smile to their face.

4. Let them shine

Generally, people enjoy doing things that they’re good at. Instead of sticking to the way things have always been, consider having a talk with your spouse to see if they’re interested in re-dividing the at-home workload. Perhaps they’ve always been in charge of bath time but they’d love the opportunity to read bedtime stories instead. Be flexible and help your partner shine at home by making sure they’re doing the things they like doing.

5. Tell the world how great they are (in front of them!)

Your spouse is fantastic and, if you’re a more private couple, they might prefer you only tell them how great they are when you’re alone. Many people, however, love receiving compliments in front of others. Next time you’re out with your friends or extended family, don’t hesitate to brag about your spouse. Whether you love that they’re hard working, fantastically patient, or simply a do-what-they-say kind of person, don’t hesitate to share how proud you are to call them yours!
