5 Reasons Why I Love Being an Auntie

lyra-text

Just yesterday I received the text from a dear friend letting us know she was going into early labor! She was just over 41 weeks along and we’ve all been waiting with bated breath – most of all mom and dad – for this newest babe to come out and play. At the end of her incredible journey she and her husband will have a beautiful baby boy or girl – and I will be blessed to have another precious little one to call me Auntie.

Don’t even get me started on the fact my brother and sister-in-law also have their first coming close on the aforementioned baby’s heels. My first blood-related nephew! I’m so stinking excited.

And then this morning, as I sat at my computer I received a call from a dear friend. She opened the conversation by informing me that when her son, Aiden, woke this morning he told her he wanted to see me. How sweet is that?! I proceeded to chat with the little man for a few minutes, which just made my day.

How lucky am I to be included in the lives of all these neat little beings? All this goodness has me reflecting – just in time to celebrate Aunt and Uncle’s Day on Friday. Allow me to share five of the reasons I am so thankful to be an Auntie.

test drive

It’s like test-driving a car. Forgive the poor analogy, but it really is like dipping your toes into the parenting pool without having to take the plunge. I don’t have to change all the diapers (hey, I pitch in as necessary!), be woken up several times a night only to be woken up again at the proverbial crack of dawn, or deal with the tears, whining, and other not-so-great things parents do out of love.

You never have to be the bad guy. Okay, not never. But not nearly as often as mommy and daddy have to. And, if I’m lucky, when my nieces and nephews are older I’ll be the cool Auntie they’ll share secrets, crushes, and dreams with!

You get to buy the neat, cute kid stuff, but it doesn’t clutter up your house or get left on the floor for you to step on or trip over when you least expect it. I would like to think I’m pretty good about refraining from buying every oh-so-cool kid thing I see for my nieces and nephews. Probably because I must have some minor OCD and despise clutter and loathe the idea of buying something that’s just going to equate to more “stuff”. All things I’ll likely have to get over when I have children of my own. Until then I shall bask in the glory of my clutter-free, kid-free lifestyle.

cousins

You know that someday, when you’re ready for kids of your own, your nieces and nephews are going to make the best cousins around. I have the pleasure of calling not only blood/marriage-related kiddos my nieces and nephews, but some of my friend’s children as well. And let me tell you, they are pretty remarkable kids. They’re of all different ages 7 and under, and it is so much fun to see the older kids playing with and taking the little kids under their wings. I know they’ll do the same for our little one and am so very thankful for it.

aiden

Nothing beats it when they tell you they love you in that sweet little voice of theirs. Or when your nephew decides you’re now ‘Egg Megan’ even though he can say the word ‘Aunt’ just fine. Or when their tiny little hand reaches up to hold yours. Or when they’re tired from a day at the pool and a bigger kid wasn’t doing so well at playing with them (hey, I didn’t say the older kids mentioned in #4 were perfect) and they just want to be held and snuggled by you until it’s time to go. Or their hugs. Ohhh the hugs!

Maybe I am almost ready to be a parent, but until I actually have a bun in the oven, I’m going to enjoy the heck out of my title as Auntie.

5 Reasons Why I Love Being an Auntie

I have a constant craving for adventure and love to pack as much fun into life as I can. My brother, cousin, my husband, and I are all my Aunt “rented kids”. she says we’re better than having her own kids because she can do all the fun stuff and then send us back when shes done lol

I agree with you on every statement except the one about the clutter. Sure the parents may pay you back in the same kind of clutter building toys that you have their kids, or they may just remember how much their kids loved playing with that particular toy. I do try to buy toys that have educational value at least up to 2 or 3 years old, and then I start asking what the child wants and by then they usually only get birthday and Christmas presents, and you can only slip so much annoying stuff under the watchful eyes of a mom on those occasions. But I do try to not buy too many things that make noise, because I figure that WILL come back to haunt me!!! Great article, and great to know there’s someone else out that loves being an aunt as much as I do!!!
