As summer approaches and the temperatures begin to rise, many parents celebrate being able to head into the great outdoors. While playing at the park, splashing in the sprinkler, or biking on the greenway are fun, it’s always important to stay sun safe as you play. Check out the tips below to keep you and your kiddos safe this spring and summer.

Wear your sunscreen

When you’re heading outside it’s important to make sure that you (and your little ones) are always wearing sunscreen. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before heading outside and to reapply every 2-3 hours.

Don’t leave the house without a hat

Wearing a sunhat can protect your face and ears as you have fun outdoors. When searching for sun hats for you and your kiddos, look for a wide brimmed hat that provides coverage over the ears and shade across the neck and face.

Check out sun safe clothing

When you’re going to be outdoors for a few hours nothing is better than sun safe clothing when it comes to protecting your little one’s skin. Look for brands that have a high UPF rating like Snapper Rock. Nothing is better than clothing your tot (or yourself!) in adorable clothing that you know will keep them safe.

Seek out shade

When you’re outdoors for long periods of time, do your best to seek out spots in the shade. Whether it’s taking a snack break under a picnic shelter, resting in the shade of a great tree, or stepping under the porch cover while you reapply sunscreen, taking a break from the sun can help you avoid serious sunburn.

Plan your outdoor fun for the morning or evening

When you’re having fun in the sun it can be tough to take a break. But, when possible, try to avoid the midday sun and plan your outdoor time for the morning and evening. The sun’s rays are the hottest in the afternoon so simply avoiding being outdoors at that time can help you stay sun safe this spring and summer!
