5 Cold Weather Family Resorts That Will Make Winter a Lot More Fun
I am a life-long resident in a cold weather state and I will be the first to admit that it's taken me some time to embrace the fun of getting outside in the snow. With four young kids, getting outside to play can feel like a lot of work–there are snow pants involved, someone having to go pee the minute we step outside, and more mittens than I can ever keep track of.
But this year, with kids who are in the “sweet spot” of parenting, meaning they can all walk, talk, shower alone, and play alone, yet still want to be near me, I'm looking to embrace the time with them this winter.
At long last, I'm learning that winter doesn't have to mean holing away in our houses, shivering over a cup of tea–winter can be a blast, thanks to these family-friendly winter resorts that combine the best of outdoor winter fun with amenities that will warm you from the inside out, like water parks, pools, all-season rollercoasters, adult spa services (ahhhhh) and on-site dining.
Okemo Mountain Resort, VT
A resort that features an outdoor rollercoaster for the winter and summer is a winner in my book. My family and I will be staying at this resort come January and while my husband isn't 100% sold on the idea of a winter vacation yet, I am looking forward to creating memories that will last forever for our family of six. It might not be Disney, but something tells me that taking our first ski lessons together, snow tubing, or ice-skating followed by hot chocolate by a fire will be even more magical.
Okemo Mountain Resort features many family specials and highlights of the resort include a mountain coaster, ice skating, snow tubing, fatbike riding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, indoor golf, swimming, racquetball, fitness classes, aerobic and weight training, massage, sauna, relaxing by a fire, or soaking in a hot tub.
Mammoth Mountain Inn, Mammoth Lakes, CA
I was immediately drawn to this resort by its majestic mountain backdrop and the fact that the kids can swim outside year-round in a heated pool, all with the snowcapped mountains behind them. The Mammoth Mountain Inn is the only resort on the shore of Twin Lakes, Tamarack Lodge and it offers winter activities for families that range from high-speed snow tubing at Woolly's Tube Park to snowmobile adventures with seasoned experts and gondola rides for all ages.
Boyne Mountain Resort, Harbor Springs, MI
Nobody does winter like Michigan, so leave it to the mitten state to know how to provide for an unforgettable winter family fun experience that will have you, well, needing your mittens. There are actually three Boyne Resorts in MI, but the Mountain Resort provides outdoor fun, skiing right outside some of the accommodations, and the state's largest indoor water park.
Hershey Lodge, PA
Want a winter getaway but don't really feel like skiing with the family? I totally understand and my motto is, when in doubt, turn to chocolate. The Hershey Park Resort offers 650 suites for families, with tons of cold-weather fun, like an indoor waterpark and special holiday events like their Christmas Candylane attraction, Hershey Lights, and of course, milk and cookies in-room.
Timber Ridge Lodge, WI
A resort that would be best suited for families who are brand-new to skiing or are looking for a good mix of light outdoor activity and a lot of indoor options as well, Timber Ridge Lodge in the Midwest is a relaxed, fun option for families. The resort features the state's largest indoor water park, a spa, kids' activities, skiing on over 30 acres, indoor bowling, an on-site candy shop, arcade and its own railroad with seasonal holiday rides.
How do you spend winter break with your family? Are you more of a warm-weather family or do you embrace the cold weather?
