4 Tips for Choosing the Right Fitness Class – and Sticking to It!

A few weeks ago during a visit with my mom I attended a Pilates class with her.

It was wonderful.

Not just the class itself, but the fact that other people were in attendance talking, laughing, and pushing each other through the workout.

I had forgotten how great classes were. Since leaving my last gym and joining my new one, I have not attended a fitness class. I used to go to yoga and Pilates regularly. I knew the instructors and many of the students. We talked before class as we got ready for the class, we joked during class, and we hung out a little after. I got used to the pace of the class, and though each class was different I knew what to expect. And knowing how much fun it was when I got there made me more apt to go.

If you feel working out with others is a great motivational factor that will keep you on a fitness routine longer than working out solo will, you should locate a class – or several – to take.

How can you pick a good one and ensure you stick to it?

  1. Look for classes on your level. I made the mistake once of taking an Intermediate yoga class. Halfway through, we were instructed to do headstands – in the middle of the room. Not an easy task for me and way beyond my level! My mom had a similar issue with a yoga course that was beyond her ability and did more harm than good. If you aren’t sure, ask the instructor prior to taking the class. If you get into the class and realize it’s not at your pace – too fast and you might get injured, too slow or easy and you won’t get the workout you need – make an early exit. (Stay near the door your first day so you don’t disrupt the class if you go!) Or skip the harder stuff if it’s an advanced class and ask about a beginner’s course option once class is over.

  2. Pick the exercise you like the least and attend a class for that. For instance, if you hate cardio, look for a spinning or kick boxing class, something that incorporates cardio but makes it fun. Don’t enjoy lifting? Try a power class that incorporates lifting and strength. Flexibility low? Try yoga. If you get into a class you really enjoy, you might find yourself more likely to return even if the exercise itself isn’t your favorite.

  3. Make sure it fits your schedule. One of my favorite yoga classes was held at night around dinner time. Guess what? I never attended! Though I loved the class, it just didn’t work into my daily life. I ended up taking a class during the morning after dropping the girls at school and I stuck with it. It worked in my schedule and it motivated me enough to keep me busy.

  4. Go with a friend. Classes are great, but taking a class with a friend is even better! If you can find a friend to attend with you, make it a weekly date. Better yet – stop and grab a cup of coffee (or a smoothie) after for some girl time. If you look forward to spending time with your friend, you’re more likely to go.

Do you take fitness classes? If so, what classes do you take and love? If not, what would motivate you to do so?
