When summer rolls around many parents like to head outside and enjoy the sunshine with their little ones. Splash pads, swimming pools, and playgrounds are all favorite summer activities but, when you want to stick closer to home, gardening can be a fantastic parent-child activity. When you set out to enjoy an afternoon gardening with your tot, there are a few tips you can keep in mind to make sure it’s a successful day!

Set Realistic Expectations

When you set out to garden with your little one, make sure you set realistic expectations. Your little one likely won’t be able to plant seeds in neat rows or efficiently pull weeds but they will likely be able to plop plants into the holes you dig or turn the soil themselves.

Keep Cool

Nothing makes for a cranky toddler like being, hot, thirsty, or tired. Make sure you keep your tot cool as you garden by dressing them in loose clothing, keeping a large sun hat on their head, and staying hydrated. It also doesn’t hurt (and can lead to lots of giggles) to give them a few playful squirts with the water hose.

Keep it Short

If you’re a parent, you know that little ones can only pay attention to the same activity for so long. Make sure that you plan accordingly and limit the time you plan to spend on each part of the activity. Usually little ones can enjoy a few minutes of digging, a few minutes of planting, and a few minutes of watering before they decide to move on to another activity.

Let your Little One Explore at their own Pace

It’s great to set out with a goal in mind, it’s even better to be flexible and adjust your goal as you go. Instead of stressing about what gets done and what doesn’t, take the time to enjoy watching your babe experience the feel of dirt between their fingers and sunshine on their face.
