4 Sanity Saving Shortcuts That You Can Start Using TODAY!

Now that I’ve been sharing my words here at EverydayFamily, I think that you might know that I really like tips. I’ve given you tips on easy healthy living, tips for how to make mommy friends, and tips for streamlining your morning routine…not to mention tips for getting rid of the pacifierpotty training, and bath safety tips for kids. Now I’m going to share four sanity saving tips that will make life a little more bearable when you’re having one of those days!

Serve a “Homemade” Frozen Dinner

During the week, the kids’ schedules make it hard to find the time and energy to cook from scratch, though I absolutely love to cook. So I tend to take lots of shortcuts.

Yes, I do buy frozen meals at the grocery store, but then I dress them up to taste homemade. For example, grab a frozen lasagna or other meal that your family enjoys, and top it with fresh chopped basil and grated Parmesan cheese. Make garlic bread and a salad (use the bagged salad and add fresh tomatoes) for the sides, and you just saved yourself lots of prep and clean up time.

I’ve made some meals that my family didn’t even realize weren’t homemade! Be creative with it.

Deal with The Never Ending Mess

I used to pick up the kids’ messes every time I found one. Now, I refuse to be a slave to toys.

Find some decorative baskets that you can have the kids put all of their toys in throughout the day – let them clean up, not you! The storage should be accessible so that it’s easy for the children to use. Maybe schedule times before or after lunch, before dinner, and another round right before bedtime.

TV or iPad Time is Okay… If They Are Learning

I’ll be honest – the TV is on most of the day in our house. However it’s always on PBS, Nick Jr., or the Disney channel, so I know the kids are at least learning something while they watch it. Same goes with the iPad.

30 minutes or an hour of screen time gives you time to fix dinner or to finish other chores. It also can help children improve verbal and math skills, and “teach” them basic things like rhyming, colors, shapes, etc. Just make sure to avoid shows with no educational value.

EverydayFamily’s own Dr. Deborah Gilboa actually weighed in on this topic over at Huffington Post when she wrote Why ‘Screen Time’ Doesn’t Really Mean Anything Anymore.

Don’t Forget To Make Time for Me Time

There are lots of ways to get a bit of time to yourself without having to leave home. Sneak in a half an hour of reading during the kids’ nap time or after their bedtime. Skip vacuuming one day to find a bit of time to do something you enjoy. Hide a treat that you love (Yes! I said it) and enjoy it once the kids’ are down for the night. Whatever you do, just make sure to spoil yourself occasionally… your sanity will thank you for it!
