Jodie Smith, 17 years old, was an active and avid dancer suffering from stomach pains. As the stomach pains grew increasingly painful, her mother rushed her to Pontefract Hospital at 1 a.m.

“Once at Pontefract Hospital, doctors quickly discovered Miss Smith was pregnant and in labour, and transferred her to Pinderfields in Wakefield, where she gave birth in the early hours,” according to this article.

Jack Author, whom midwives suppose was a “couple weeks overdue, and certainly full-term,” was born weighing a healthy 8 lbs on July 23. His young mother never had prenatal care and never knew or suspected she was pregnant. Jodie routinely danced and worked out. “She hadn’t put on any weight … and looked just as slim all the way through.” Jodie and the baby’s 19-year-old, shell-shocked father still plan on attending college (she will study dance).

It’s just hard to believe, but it obviously happens. Ther are just SO many changes your body goes through, not just weight gain. Its hard to believe that these people who have this happen have no morning sickness, missed periods, breast tenderness and engorgment, MOVEMENT OF A BABY INSIDE??
Lol, I just find it hard to believe that through so many changes in your body someone could be oblivious. I didn’t think you had to be very in tune with your body to miss these changes but I guess not so with some poeple. It looks like this mom and baby were lucky and had a great family to support them.

I know every woman is different but no weight gain to me is unheard of im sorry but with my pregnancies I’ve gained every bit of weight with no problem

  3. Grace says:

i am having my fourth baby and have not gained anything, but do show, at least i think i show, i have had friends just 2 weeks ago come up to me and say, i did not know you were pregnant. yes they were around me this whole time. i have just obese so why would they notice

  4. ShelbyWhite says:

i can believe it because i did not find out or know until i was 4 months pregnant and my sister had the same type of thing happen to her she went into labor before she found out she was pregnant its kind of a medical mystery

  5. Elizabeth says:

I’ve never been pregnant, but I find it hard to believe when women don’t know they are pregnant and its been several months.

    • Robin says:

Some women still have menstrual cycles and no changes. I wouldn’t have ever known my sister was pregnant if she hadn’t told me. Same with me. I take a test monthly, which is how I found out still over half way through, and didn’t start showing until about eight months.

  6. Denise says:

Hard to believe but possible. My sister in law had to have three different blood tests before one turned out positive (her being used to extremely irregular periods. She still had one occasionally) with both her children. Some babies are just ninjas in the womb I suppose. Lol but in all seriousness, I’m glad everything turned out so well. 😀

  7. Ashley says:

This is strange, I knew right away and I was 3 weeks pregnant. My belly didn’t start showing until i was 6 months almost 7 months pregnant.

  8. Robert says:

I can believe all these stories because I was 6 months pregnant with my son when i took some home pregnancy test.I had to wait another month to see my doctor by then I was at 28 weeks pregnant and it’s a boy. After that I started gaining some weight and my stomach started to show.He was a born 8lbs and healthy.

  9. Bri says:

That is just crazy no weight gain. But at least he’s healthy and she’s healthy!

  10. Leah says:

I could believe it! I didn’t find out or suspect that I was pregnant until I was already about 4 and a half months along. And seriously had no symptoms until that point to clue me in! But i am happy about it and will be welcoming my first son soon!! (June 6th to be exact!)

everyone is different and i have been told if a women is in shape and never had kids that she may caring high are in her back and never feel baby move etc i didnt no i was pregnant with my first child until i was 8mths pregnant and got the flu i though but i was in labor so everyone is different

  12. Kristin says:

I can understand where she was coming from because I am 25 weeks and just found out when I was 23 weeks and 4 days. I have been sick to my stomach during my whole pregnancy, looking back at it….but I have a finicky stomach to begin with. I am 144 lbs. and was a dancer until I found out that I was pregnant. I went to the doctors and they told me there that I was pregnant! I was shocked. I have carried a baby once before, and was on the birth control mirena….obviously something happened to it. but my point being, I never suspected that I was pregnant.

  13. Caitlyn says:

It has nothing to do with feeling pregnant with me…I only gained 12 lbs and my child weighed 8 lbs and my stomach stuck out so far that i would have been stupid not to think i was pregnant . I heard some women carry so high that they dont show hardly at all

  14. fantastimoso says:

Its not surprising that she is pregnant at 17. It seems that every girls goal is to get pregnant ASAP, and by the time a girl is 10, she will be picking out clothes for her baby.

    • Shelly says:

Actually, that is not true. I could have lived my entire life never having a kid and been perfectly happy…My fiancee had to talk me into having one, because he wanted to have a child. Not this soon though. I am 27, and she is my first and only. I showed symptoms at about 2 months along (sickness), but gained no weight at first. I did not really show until about 6 months and carried her very high. I had several people tell me I did not look pregnant, until the very end, then they were shocked by how far along I was. My baby girl was born a healthy 6lbs 10oz back in June. Though my pregnancy was rough on my body, I know many women who had no problems at all.

  15. MIke says:

what’s getting lost is the teen pregnancy rate tho ?

  16. Angie says:

I get tired of everyone’s cynicism about this type of story and stuff in general. Just because YOU felt pregnant, etc. doesn’t mean everyone has the same feelings, cues, etc. For example, I never could feel my son kick or move inside of me my entire pregnancy. I don’t know why, I just couldn’t and I wanted to experience that but my body was different. Instead, I constantly worried and every time I had a doctor appt. she did an ultrasound to make sure he was still alive. My doctor didn’t think it was that big of a deal, by the way. She said it happens sometimes and everyone is different. So yes, I believe it when this girl says she didn’t know she was pregnant and shame on the rest of you for being so negaive.

A girl I went to school with found out she was pregnant at 8 1/2 months, and had her baby 2 weeks later. Apparently she had an anterior placenta which was why she never felt her daughter move. She was never sick, and was also young, so attributed her fatigue to going to school, taking care of her sick mother, and working 2 jobs. She was overweight to begin with and actually lost weight(not trying to). It does happen.

  17. dana says:

all I do with myself is go to school come home cook clean and take care of my children the last baby I had I was still having my cycle every month I found out at 5 months I was pregnant with her I guess because she is the only girl things went differently now I’m pregnant with my last child ( I will not be having anymore) I found out earlier but these last 3 pregnancies were back to back so with my Toot I thought that I just never lost the baby weight I’m so glad this is another boy.

  18. cheree says:

If you are a dancer it is possible to go without a period although it does not happen too frequently I am very healthy I was a very active dancer I never had a period for ten months and no I was not pregnant my doctor said I was healthy it was because I was so active it was ridiculous of course they had me do test just in case but it is possible she did not have many periods in her dance career, I really believe she did not know even though a baby moves and you do get symptoms sometimes we get so caught up in routines and doing what we love we do not realize many other things and I am glad the mom and baby are okay and I am not saying for sure she did not know because obviously I do not have enough evidence to conclude that she could of very well known not gained weight though and did not want anyone to know because in some areas it is discouraging to have a child as a teen but I will say this wow crazy story

    • Sarah says:

Seriously? No punctuation except for a single comma? My head starting swimming once I finished the first line. Notice I did not say first sentence, since there is no period any where in sight. I am hoping you don’t have children as yet. It may help to first finish basic grammar and sentence construction before you attempt the feat of parenting. This is so ridiculous.

      • Well, she DID say it is possible to go without a period! LOL!

But seriously, what’s up with this no-punctuation trend? The previous commenter (“dana”) ALSO wrote an entire comment without a single period! (Okay, there was ONE period at the very end.)

Writers, please….let your readers come up for air once in a while! I feel like I’m out of breath!

  19. Erica says:

she’s so lucky she didn’t gain any weight ! i hope i’m lucky and don’t gain to much !

  20. AspenXIzzard says:

I can’t believe she gained no weight!!! I can’t believe she didn’t know!!!! This is madness!!!

  21. Jennifer says:

I would love to not gain any weight but I know it’s going to happen!! I have a feeling my baby is going to be a huge whopper..

  22. Briana says:

I can understand some people not gaining much weight or any at all while pregnant, but a moving baby…that’s a big thing to not notice…as well as other symptoms…morning sickness (which not all get), carvings, and breast growth, tenderness and leaking est. She might of been hiding it from family since she didn’t gain much weight. I always thought pregnancy scares were a big concern for teenagers engaging in sexual activities…and that they tracked there periods.

I found out i was pregnant at 12 weeks and 5 days. I was used to having irregular periods but i started getting worried after the 3rd month , took a pregnancy test and sure enough i was pregnant. the whole time i had no idea, yes my breasts got bigger and i felt a little nausea occasionally but that usually happens when i get my period and i just thought i was getting a cold. I had cravings but then again i had them before being pregnant so that didnt strike me as odd. At almost 15 weeks now my stomach has very little change and nausea is gone . had i not taken the test by now i probably wouldve thought i got over a cold and was fine..

  23. Jessica says:

I have cerebral palsy and I didn’t know I was pregnant until I was four and a half months along. At the time I wanted to lose weight so I was walking a lot and I was also working at the dog groomers which is very physical work. I do not have regular periods. I thought it was odd that I wasn’t losing any weight just staying the same. I didn’t connect my symptoms until later. I got a (cold) which was obviously nasal inflammation brought on by hormones and I got a uti which I didn’t go to the doctor for because at the time I didn’t have insurance. And I got the flu which was really the flu because my whole family got it and I was the last one to contract it. I did feel movement but I have always had butterflies in my stomach and still have them to this day so I didn’t connect that either. After I found out I was pregnant by that time I quit my job at the groomers and slowed down and I gained weight. My daughter weighed 6lbs 5oz and was full term thank goodness. I was 135 when I got pregnant and I am only 5’1″ so I was only a little over weight. I didn’t have heartburn, or morning sickness or headache’s or anything else. looking back I definitely should have known but I just chalked most of it up to stress since I just started a new job and my bf and I just broke up at the time.
