Being a first-year mom can be tough because  the first year of motherhood is such a roller-coaster ride – physically and emotionally. It's full of ups and downs, good and bad, tears and laughter. Tales of mothers never changing out of pajamas, or adopting yoga pants as a daily uniform, are abundant. Showers can be scarce, just like sleep. Your mind stays wrapped around the baby's every need and every move.

It's not hard to fathom, then, how first year mothers can forget about themselves. Feeling like you’re losing your identity, feeling and looking less than your best, battling loneliness – all common themes in the first year.

How do you get yourself out of this quicksand of negativity? Here are 10 things that helped me as a first-year mom.

Acknowledge that you deserve to be happy and that sometimes, you need to come first. When you're happy, your baby's happy.

Ask for help. It's not a sign of weakness.

Accept help when it's offered. Friends and family want to help.

Take short breaks, when possible. When your husband is around, ask him to look after the baby for a while. Take a shower, go for a walk, grab a coffee. Do one small thing a day, just for you.

Eat regularly. This sounds impossible in the early days, but make it a conscious effort. Even if it's just an apple. You need the energy.

Set intentions every morning. Whether it's to be at peace today, or to stay calm. It helps to guide you through the day.

Play with your baby. You don't have to do this all day, but take 10 minutes at a time, throughout the day, to really play. Have fun, smile, laugh.

Talk to a friend, whether it's on the phone or instant chat online. It will help you stay anchored to have an adult conversation on a regular basis.

Go out with your baby. Take the opportunity to get some exercise in by taking a walk, or doing a quick grocery run. Getting out of the house is good for you and your child.

Go out alone. Ask your husband or your parents to help, or hire a babysitter for a couple of hours. Meet a friend, watch a movie, go for coffee, or read a book. Regular breaks away from your children are great for your well-being.

    I’ve seen what happens to people after they have their first kid and i always worry its going to be a lot… well im certain it is but i think these are really helpful although i dont think its possible to even do more than 3 a day i do think they will help wonders and im glad i found them early .:)

  5. I really find these tips helpful. I have a problem asking others for help. I always thought of it as a sign on weakness. I feel much better knowing that it isn’t.

    one thing that works well with me is hamburger helper meals. You can easily change small things or add more healthier ingredients to make them healthy and my family loves them. Add salads as a side also, and for desert, fruit filled jello and sugar free apple crisp are things that are relatively quick, easy and healthy.

    i think im so lucky that so many of my friends have kids, it means we can have plenty of playdates, and while the kiddies play, we can catch up

    Great tips!

    The biggest time hurdle for me has been cooking. I finally had to face the fact that I was spending way too many night ordering my kids dinner the the local drive thru. As a single mom, with three kids and two jobs, I was at a loss. I had time to cook dinner (as long as it was fairly quick and simple) it was figuring out WHAT to cook that was healthy, but didn’t break the bank, and finding the time to look up and compare recipes.

    I use a meal-planning service to take care of the research and stuff, so all I have to do it shop and cook. There are several out there, I use hautemealz.com, which is run by a group of chefs. Love the food, all of the recipes are simple, but unique, and I actually having time to cook for my kids again. Plus, they’re always available to answer my questions (I’ve actually messaged them from the grocery store!)

    The fact that they organize each weeks recipe to use similar ingredients has really cut down on the weight of my shopping cart, too.

    It’s pretty cheap, at $5/month…less that one cooking magazine, especially considering the time (and fast food money, lol) it saves me!
