10 Fun Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with Kids
At our house, St. Patrick’s Day is sort of a big deal.
Nope, we’re not Irish, but we do have a child who celebrates his birthday on the happy holiday. So, we always go green that day in the spirit of my honorary Irishman.
To celebrate, I was planning to share with you a great breakfast recipe for green eggs and ham that you can give your kids in honor of St. Patty’s Day while reading the book.
I was going to tell you how my children barfed and cried when I served it to them and then fell in love with it after I forced them to take a bite.
It was going to be awesome and entertaining, just like the Dr. Seuss book we all know and love.
And then?
I found out last week that #3 is actually allergic to eggs! Go figure!
We knew he was allergic to something other than nuts (the reason we got him tested), we just didn’t know what.
Now we know, and I will NOT eat green eggs and ham.
But, we can share some other fun St. Patrick’s Day activities we think you should try.
Activity #1
Let them watch you drink green beer. Kidding, totally kidding. You can enjoy a great non-alcoholic green beverage with them though. You can make your own Shamrock Shakes (just add green food coloring and some peppermint extract to your best vanilla shake)!
How to: Make this super green smoothie!

Activity #2
Play hide the shamrock. Get a shamrock (we bought a bunch of the foam ones from the craft store for $1) and hide it somewhere in your house. Tell your kid to find it while you give them hot/cold clues.

Activity #3
Hunt for four leaf clovers. In your yard, at the park, anywhere grass and weeds grow is the perfect place. You probably won’t find any (the 3 leaf variety are the common ones), but you can consider yourself super lucky if you do!

Activity #4
Frost something green. And then eat it! Like cookies, or cupcakes, or – for the less ambitious moms – just buy a can of white frosting, drop a couple of drops of green food coloring inside, and slather that between a couple of graham crackers. Kids like it fine.

Activity #5
Plant some flowers. They are green and get you in the mood for spring.

Activity #6
Taste the rainbow. With Skittles of course! We make mini rainbows out of Skittles and then eat them.

Activity #7
Do a hard core craft. We don’t get down like this because, duh, I lack the skill and energy to seriously craft with my kids. But, there are a TON of good St. Patrick’s Day crafts for kids out there.

Activity #8
Go on a treasure hunt. Make some fun clues and hide objects in and around your house to get the kids moving and using their brains. I found a great St. Patrick’s Day Treasure Hunt printable on Oopsey Daisy.
Activity #9
Read all about it. My boys enjoy The Leprechaun’s Gold by Pamela Duncan Edwards, but head to your local library and I bet they’ll have plenty of good ones to choose from.
Activity #10
Just have fun! We get to top off our day with St. Patrick’s Day themed cupcakes, and I can’t think of a better way to end a day than that.
