5 Great Finger Foods for Your Baby
As your child starts to show signs of wanting to feed himself, you need to have some finger food that will entice your baby to eat. Letting children feed themselves helps build self-confidence, and can help set the foundation for healthy eating later in life. Each of these finger foods is nutritional, as well as tasty.
A ripe, cut up avocado is a great source of healthy fat for your baby. If you have a child that is underweight, or needs more fat in her diet, avocado can help. A ripe avocado will feel slightly soft when squeezed. Cut the avocado around the middle, lengthwise, and twist both sides to split it apart. To remove the pit, hold the avocado in your hand with the skin side facing your palm. Take a sharp knife and whack the seed. Twist the knife and the seed will come out. Using a large spoon, scoop out the avocado fruit and cut into small cubes. Avocados brown easily, so consider running a lime along the knife blade and spoon to prevent excess browning.
When grapes are whole, they present a choking hazard to young children. To safely serve your child grapes, cut each grape into quarters.
For a good source of whole grains, boil some whole grain macaroni and drain well. Serve the cooled macaroni to your child. For an extra zest, sprinkle grated cheese over the pasta.
