Attention New Moms: You May Turn Crazy

Author: Heather Slee

I thought I kind of knew myself. You know, my likes, dislikes, preferences, values, etc. I didn't think I could really surprise myself that much and then I had a baby. So, here is my top five list of ways new moms may turn crazy.

    1. You love babies. No, you LOVE babies! For me, before my baby, I could take 'em or leave 'em. People would bring their babies to work during their maternity leaves, and everyone would mob them, vying for time to hold the baby. Not me. But now? I can't look away. I stop people at the mall and comment on their baby's cuteness. I see a baby doing something silly on America's Funniest Home Videos, and I just crack up. Cute baby in a magazine? I go out of my way to shove it in my husband's face to get confirmation on the cuteness of the baby. Suddenly, babies are the most interesting thing on the planet.

    2. You are now "a crier." If you were emotional before, you're going to be in big trouble. For me, I was so-so. Now? I can't even read some news articles in the paper. If I do accidentally read something disturbing, it sits in my belly all day like a rock. Touching moments between parents and children on TV also send me over the edge. And hearing stories about children - good or bad - makes me cry. It's embarrassing. I carry tissue in my purse like my grandmother.

    3. You are a mother bear. You have heightened senses, intuition, gut feelings, and a feeling of protectiveness so strong, you feel like you could lift a car over your head. You would do absolutely anything and everything to protect your child. Even if a stranger on the street looks at you and your baby funny, the hairs on the back of your neck rise. I almost scare myself a little with these crazy mother-bear feelings.

    4. You are Friendly McCheerful. Other mothers and fathers now stop and talk to you out in public. You now freely exchange information with strangers, like your child's age, weight, likes, dislikes, and funny noises. You freely give and receive advice in the sippy cup aisle at the store. People hold doors open for you if you have a carrier. People smile at you while you push the stroller down the sidewalk. And you smile back!

    5. And finally, you are full of love. You've loved before; I loved my family, my husband, my friends - all very dearly, and I still do. But this love is unimaginable and all-consuming. And I never knew it was inside of me. So I guess I can still surprise myself. And I guess it's okay to be a little crazy; it's totally worth it.
