Starting a Family Collection
Author: Heather Slee
People have been collecting things probably since the beginning of time, and it's impossible to name all the different collections out there. Some of the more common collections include stamps, spoons, books, art, antiques, vintage toys, autographs, sports memorabilia, records, and the list goes on and on.
So, if you're not a collector, why would you want your family to start a collection? Well, there are many reasons. First, starting a family collection gives every family member a common goal, which promotes togetherness and teamwork. Also, the actual act of collecting, shopping or searching, displaying, and looking over all your past finds is a great way to spend time together. Collecting things can also be educational, not only for the kids, but for everyone. If you collect things from every state, that's a great tool to learn about geography and history. If you collect art, that's a great way to learn about art history and what society was like during different decades.
However, it might be challenging picking out what to collect and you can go about this in a couple different ways. One, you could just choose something that you think everyone will enjoy and use a little marketing skill to get people on board. Otherwise, you can put it to a vote. Have everyone come up with one or two ideas and then do a secret ballot. Or, you could provide the choices and have everyone vote for one of those. It's up to you!
Once you've chosen an item to collect just start looking. Antique stores, flea markets, odd little shops, garage sales - everywhere! Pretty soon you'll find that your family really comes together to find your special items; it's like an inside joke or a private tradition. Even when your teenager is out with their friends, they may duck into a shop quickly just to check and see if there are any miniature tea cups! Good luck, and have fun collecting!
