Pregnant: Saving Money
Author: Jeannie Fleming-Gifford
Congratulations! You're expecting. What an exciting, perhaps overwhelming, time. There may be a million thoughts running through your head. These may include wondering if your child is a "boy or girl," thinking about how and when to share the news with family and friends, to worrying about the financial impact of having a baby.
Welcome to parenthood! There are some things you will have no control over and others that you can make happen any way you want. One of these is taking financial control and, specifically, saving a few dollars when preparing for baby.
How can you be savvy when it comes to planning for baby?
What do you really need?
There are magazines, websites, and – of course, friends and family, who will tell you what you need when you are pregnant.
As you head down the path of planning for baby, keep it simple.
Check out these savvy saver tips below:
1) Stick to the basics. What does baby really need for their arrival? There are so many gadgets and gizmos available. When bringing baby into the world, you don't need as much as you may think. A few sleepers, a couple receiving blankets, and a few other things are really all you need. Although baby clothes are darling, your baby will outgrow these clothes quickly. Save those pennies for another day. Once baby comes, you can evaluate what you really can use versus what you think you will use.
2) Keep it simple when decorating baby's room. It may be easier said than done. After all, we all want the very best for our child. That doesn't mean you need everything new, though. Consider creating a space for baby based on what you have. This may mean using a neutral color of paint that you have "in stock" leftover from another room of the home, versus buying new. It may mean not investing in the matching set of curtains, rug, etc. Chances are, within a couple years, your little one's personality will be in full bloom and you will once again be re-doing this nursery to a space that reflects your child's personal tastes.
3) Go green. From planning to breastfeed (no bottles or formula will save you a lot of money!) to using cloth diapers, going green will not only do the planet good, but will also help you save money.
Pregnancy, it's about the baby, not about the stuff.
Keep it simple and save a few dollars – you just might need them in the years ahead.
