Preparing for Baby: What to Do Before You're Due
Obviously, you've got babies on the brain. What can you do to prepare yourself for a pregnancy?
- Get on the same page with your partner.
Don't wait until the nurse is wheeling Junior out the door for his circumcision to realize that your husband is all for it and you aren't. Discuss issues important to you now. Do you want to breastfeed? Vaccinate? Have the birth at home?
You don't have to sit your significant other down and initiate a thorough examination regarding every aspect of pregnancy and parenting, but you should start having these conversations, if you haven't already. When you see the toddler kicking and screaming as his mother drags him through the mall, what happens? If your husband says, "What that kid needs is a good whipping!" and you are opposed to spanking of any kind, it is better to start working that out now, before it is your kid doing the kicking and screaming. - Have a plan, but be ready for it to change.
Will you be a working mom? Does your husband want to be a SAHD? Are you preparing for single parenting? Start working out the logistics now. If you know that you'll have to budget your money and adjust your spending, start now. Keep in mind, though, that life happens. Layoffs, cross country job offers, broken radiators and appendicitis can show up unannounced.
You've certainly heard that if you wait for the perfect time to have children, you may never have them. While that can be true, now is not the time to sit back and figure that things will work themselves out. - Let go of worry and embrace excitement.
There is only so much you can control. Life is a crazy ride, and sometimes you just have to hang on tight and try to enjoy the view. Whether you have tried for years to conceive or you are facing an unplanned and unexpected pregnancy, try to allow yourself time to simply embrace the wonder happening inside you.
