Little Gifts, Big Love: Father’s Day Crafts for You and Your Toddler
Author: Melanie Denney
Once, the discovery of a little stone carving with a note of love, good wishes, and gratitude, from a child to his father, led to a belief that there may have been a celebratory day for fatherhood, ever since primitive times. How sweet it must have been for that father to receive such special sentiments from his child.
There may not be many people carving letters in stone anymore, but one detail of that story remains the same, and that is: little ones simply love making things to give away. So, what better way to help your toddlers show their affection than to help them make their dads a handmade-with-love gift this Father’s Day? Here are a few ideas you can use to help your toddler create a masterpiece of love:
An Ancient Stone Carving
Take your toddler outside to find the perfect rock to “carve.” Let him draw pictures on the rock with markers and paint. Have him draw a message to his daddy. After he is finished, translate his “hieroglyphs” into English. Now your child has a priceless relic, paper weight, or trinket to present to his dad on Father’s Day.
A Credit Collage
Take a piece of heavy cardstock and cut it down to the size of a credit card so it can be carried around in his wallet. Let your little one color the card, both sides, and then make a collage by pasting some photographs of your little one, and piece of fabric from one of her old, favorite outfits. Use anything that will remind her dad of her.
A Handful of Love
Trace your little toddler’s hand on a piece of shrinking paper (you can find this at craft supply stores), have your child draw inside the outline of their traced hand. Cut out the outlined hand, punch a hole through it so it can be put on a key ring, and bake it. Dad will have a hand full of love to keep on his key chain.
The Best Dad Barbeque Sauce
For the barbeque-loving father, make him a batch of homemade BBQ sauce. Find a recipe for a delicious grilling concoction. Let your little one help you measure the ingredients, dump them in a mixing bowl, stir them together, and make a special label for “The Best Dad Barbeque Sauce” to stick on a storage container. A nice steak dinner would probably pair nicely with the special sauce, too.
F.U.D.G.E. Day Cards
Dads are not the only ones who play a big role in fatherhood. Perhaps there is someone who stands out as a very important father figure in your child’s life, and maybe you feel he is in need of some well deserved recognition too. This calls for a Fathers, Uncles, Dads, Grandpas, and Excellent Friend Day card! It’s so simple. Make a card that says “Happy F.U.D.G.E Day.” Have your child decorate it with his favorite coloring tool, and then adorn it with a decedent piece of fudge.
Try making one of these gifts with your toddler this Father’s Day, and you’re sure to have a gift that will be treasured by Dad for years, and years to come.
