No matter what age your children are, you can have a fun-filled vacation with them in tow. However, planning a vacation which includes kids can take a bit more planning than one that is just you and your partner. When planned ahead of time, you can have a great vacation with your kids.
Your most important decision when planning a family vacation is the location you are going. For starters, you likely do not know how your kids fare with air travel, so choosing an 18 hour flight to Australia is not a good choice for your first trip. If you are flying, try to keep it reasonable so that you don't end up with cranky kids trapped on a plane.
With in a plane ride of just a few hours you can get to just about any destination you desire: beach, skiing, theme parks, etc. Find a location that has lots to offer in the way of attractions, places your kids will eat, and possibly a few points of interest that you can reach in a rental car. Remember that just the thrill of being away from home will be enough to keep your kids happy - you don't have to fill the entire vacation with activities.
When you choose a location, your next major decision is where you will stay. You will want to look for a hotel or resort that either caters to children, or at least has the necessary comforts so you and your family can enjoy yourselves. This includes having facilities like a kiddie pool, playground or play area, access to a babysitting service, and so on. If you will need items like a playpen or crib, ensure that the hotel has these available.
If you are hesitant about taking a long trip with your kids the first time around, take a look at local destinations. Camping is always fun for kids, and there is likely a family campground close to home. This way, if the family is not having a fun time, you can always come home and try again later. Even staying the weekend at a local hotel or motel is a good way to get kids used to travelling before you take a big trip. This way, you can see if travelling with your whole family is something you want to do, or whether it would be better to wait until your children are a bit older.
