I Feel Sick -- Am I Pregnant?

Author: Heather Slee

I knew I was pregnant when I suddenly started to experience painful, flaming, can't-sleep-all-night heartburn. I was not a frequent sufferer of heartburn, so I knew something was different; something had changed. Sure enough, the test was positive. But not every woman experiences the same kinds of symptoms -- and some women don't experience any symptoms at all. However, there are a few signs that many women have that may prompt you to use a home pregnancy test.

  • Breast pain or tenderness
  • Nausea (and not just in the morning—that’s a myth!)
  • Headaches
  • Backaches (lower back)
  • Fatigue
  • Heightened sense of smell
  • Heartburn
  • Food aversions or cravings
  • Frequent urination

And of course, the most common sign is a missed period. All these signs can point to pregnancy, but they also can mean other things as well. Some of the signs are very similar to premenstrual symptoms, stress, or illness. Also, some women don't experience symptoms until later in pregnancy, and some women do not experience common symptoms at all.

Even if the signs are not foolproof, they can help you decide whether or not to take a home pregnancy test. After all, the fewer tests you have to take, the better! So be aware of your changing body and don't necessarily brush off that heartburn as last night's pepperoni pizza. It might be something so much more!
