Halloween Costumes for Your Baby
Kids are expensive! And stressful! A Halloween costume, which will only be worn once, shouldn’t be either of those things. The options are endless! You can cut up old clothes to make spots, feathers, or stripes. T-shirts, onesies, sweatshirts, and leggings make a great base for many costumes, and will keep your baby warm on a chilly Halloween night. Here are a few examples on how to modify your baby’s clothes for an easy, inexpensive costume that is sure to be wicked cute.
Baaaaaad to the Bone
Hot glue cotton balls, or white poms poms (found at your local craft store), all over a white hoodie or onesie for a super quick and cute lamb costume. Pair it with black leggings, and use black felt for ears. This is great for that last-minute party invite!
Little Stinker
All this costume requires is a long-sleeved, black onesie, a black beanie, and black leggings. For the tail, stuff a black dress sock with newspaper, tissue paper, batting, or more socks – whatever you have! – and safety pin it to the bum of the leggings. Attach a white feather boa (also found at your local craft store) by hand stitching, or hot gluing, it from the beanie to the tail. Enjoy all the cuteness without all of the stink! Until, of course, it’s time for a new diaper.
Whooooo’s the cutest baby? Yours!
Collect your family’s old, stained t-shirts and cut them into individual feathers. (You’ll need about 40 for a baby costume). Use hot glue or sew them in rows, just slightly overlapping each feather. If your baby wouldn’t mind something on her arms, cut out the shape of wings using cardboard, poster board, or felt, and attach the feathers in the same way. Use two small pieces of ribbon, felt, or elastic to create armholes by gluing both ends of the material to the underside of the wing. Gently slip your baby’s arm through.

How about putting a new twist on the term, “baby food?” For a hilarious lobster costume, grab some red leggings, a red, long-sleeved shirt, and a red hat or hooded sweatshirt. Attach red pipe cleaners to the hood (for antennae), and use red felt to cut out lobster claws, which can be sewn or hot glued to the opening of the sleeve. Use a black marker to make pupils on two ping pong balls for the perfect cartoonish lobster eyes, and hot glue them on the front of the hood or hat. Parents can dress as chefs by wearing all-white clothing and making chef hats out of poster board and tissue paper. Plop your baby in a giant stock pot for an easy, funny way to carry her around the neighborhood while you trick-or-treat.
The ideas for Halloween costumes are endless, and you don’t have to look much farther than your baby’s closet. Be creative! What can you come up with using regular household items? No matter what, you’re sure to have the cutest, little pumpkin ever.
