Halloween Costumes: Dress Up That Baby Bump!

Author: Melanie Denney

So, you’ve got a baby bump this Halloween? This October, take advantage of it by dressing it up with some pregnant-friendly costumes. Whether you’re looking for something funny, pretty, crafty, or just plain comfortable, there are always plenty of options that’ll flatter your costume preference. See if any of these ideas below suit you, or perhaps they will simply open up some creative thoughts.

The Expecting Skeleton

For the mother who likes to keep it simple, this costume was inspired by pin boards on Pintrest, and “The Martha Stewart Show.” Pregnant skeleton shirts are sold everywhere, from Etsy to Ebay; but you can make your own wearable bones using the instructions and printable templates for the Rib Cage Tee at www.marthastewart.com. After you’ve got them cut out, print an image of your ultrasound on iron-on transfer paper, and iron it under the rib cage.

Sumo Wrestler

Give your friends (and yourself) something to giggle over with this silly costume idea. Create a Mawashi and wrestler-bosoms, by painting or sewing black fabric to a painter’s jumpsuit. Pull your hair into an up-do and have Sumo-ch fun rocking your baby bump.

Candy Machine

What kid doesn’t love going to the store and getting a treat out of the candy machine? You’ll be handing out candy to a whole lot of little kids on Halloween; so, turn yourself into a candy giving machine. Cut out circles of felt and attach them to your shirt like little pockets, all over where your sweet, pregnant belly is. Tuck small candies inside of the pockets.

Bun in the Oven

Grocery stores love getting rid of cardboard boxes, so go try some on; because for this costume, you are going to need one to wear. Cut a hole in the top for your head, holes in the side for your arms, then a door in the front. Paint it retro green, if that’s your style; or if you’d rather, cover it in tin foil for a stainless steel look. Add knobs, and make burners out of black pipe cleaner. No need to decorate the inside, you’ve already got your little bun in there.

Jeweled Spider Web

Halloween begs for some spiders; and if your style is a little bit creepy, and a little bit beautiful, you could take inspiration from one of Faberge’s stunning spider brooches, and turn your baby bump into a jeweled spider. Whether you draw it on a shirt or on your exposed belly, trace a web and spider. Glue colorful sequins and jewels over the spider, and iridescent jewels over the web (use eyelash glue on your belly).

Let you creativity and cleverness flow with these ideas, and then have a blast dressing yourself and your baby bump in fun costumes this Halloween.
