Goodbye Crib – Hello Big Kids Bed

sleeping girlYou may be wondering when the appropriate time to transition your child from their crib to a toddler bed. The truth is there is no standard age. Most children tend to make the transition between the ages of 1 ½ to 3 ½.

If your child has begun to climb out of their crib, then yes, it’s probably time to transition to a toddler bed. Climbing out of the crib just isn’t safe, but if you feel your child isn’t ready to move to a new bed, you may be able to use the crib for a bit longer by lowering the mattress in the crib down as far as possible (remember to remove padded bumpers as soon as they start to climb). The bars are now higher and harder to climb over. You can also purchase something called a “crib tent.” A crib tent is made of mesh and attaches to the railings to prevent your little one from climbing out.

If you have another little one on the way and need to use the crib for them, try to introduce the bed to your toddler at least 6-8 weeks before your next child is born. Or you may be able to buy some more time for your toddler if you use a bassinet for the new baby. Babies can safely use bassinets until about 3-4 months after they are born.

When deciding to transition your child to a toddler bed, the most important thing is to listen to them. If they aren’t ready or comfortable in a toddler bed, it may be best to delay the whole transition for a couple of months, as long as they can safely remain in their crib. If after the first night you feel you may have made the move too soon, don’t give up. However, if your child is still upset after a couple of days, then yes, go ahead and move them back to their crib. Just be sure you don’t treat their move back to the crib as punishment or a step backwards.

When the time comes, there are several things you can do to make the transition easier. For instance, place the bed in the same spot their crib occupied in their room. And don’t forget guard rails! Also, consider using sheets from their crib. It may be comforting for them to have something familiar in this new environment. Also, try getting your child excited about their new bed. Try including them in the planning, maybe they could help pick out the bed or their new sheets. Toddler sheets are usually themed after popular cartoon characters, which may get them excited for their new sleeping environment.

Remember, every child is different. Some will be eager to move to a new bed, others not so much. But with encouragement and patience, your child can successfully transition to their new bed.

  1. After about two months I moved my 2 1/2 year old back into his crib. He was getting up and playing until 10pm or later.. and when he would finally fall asleep, he’d be in his older brother’s bed who didn’t appreciate it much. Now he screams his head off about being in the crib, but he’ll be passed out 10 minutes later.

We set up the toddler bed when my son was about 1 1/2, but he wouldn’t sleep in it. He was almost climbing out of the crib so we couldn’t leave it up. He slept with us for a while, and then we decided to try a twin bed. That’s where he sleeps now. He’s about 2 1/2 now.

  6. I moved my son into a toddler bed, it helped him start walking early. he was able to climb up on the couch, so i was pretty sure he would be ready for a toddler bed.

I have a 21 month old who sleeps in my bed every night and I’m about to have a new one in about 5 weeks. I have a twin mattress set up that I can transition her into but I’m afraid she won’t want to sleep on it. I put it on the floor because I don’t want her to roll off and get hurt. I only have one crib that I want to use for the new baby but im afraid the older one will climb into the crib when the baby is in there so I have to do something. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

My daughter was 1-1/2 when she started sleeping in a big girl bed. We had just moved from Hawaii to the mainland and since there were already changes going with a new home to live in, we decided to change out her sleeping bed. Worked out great for us!

My son was 2 years old when he started using the big boy bed. I remember the day my husband assembling my son’s bed, he was so excited! That day he actually sleep on his bed without any hassle. Then on, he always go to his room and sleep. I don’t need to tell him he just go. I’m so proud of him!

I transitioned my son into a toddler bed when he was 18 mos. We were going to move our youngest one into the room with him in the next couple of months so I wanted him to be comfortable in his big boy bed. I was thankful he loved it and didnt get jealous when the time came for brother to sleep in the crib

My oldest started sleeping in a toddler bed at about 13 months. Her sister on the other hand, is about to turn 21 months and is nowhere near ready for her toddler bed. I couldn’t imagine putting her in one right now. She would be up and into everything constantly.

My daughter is the same way! She climbs everything all the time, but has not climbed out of the crib yet, thank the Lord.

My 15 month old just transitioned to a toddler bed. She absolutely hated her crib and would end up sleeping in bed with me. She loves her new bed, though. I have another little girl on the way in a few months so I need to use the crib for her. Anyway, she does get into some stuff, but that’s the joy of baby-proofing. If she has her own room get a gate for the door and baby-proof the heck out of the room. Do the same even if she doesn’t have her own room. So what if she plays with her toys until she falls asleep? She will realize how tired she is during the day and eventually just go to bed at night.

My daughter is 17 months old but still in her crib. Hasn’t tried to climb out yet. We live in a house with the bedrooms upstairs so she is going to stay in a crib for as long as possible just to keep her away from the stairs.
