This is your day not hers, and its very personal.  It should be a special time for you and you r family.  She will get over it, and I am sure if you talk to your nurse she will help you out on keeping your friends in the waiting room.  I know my nurses have always been helpful, ask her to say something like only family aloud during this time.  Good luck, this is your day, and if she does get upset she will get over it.

I've never been in that situation, but I think what the other members said should work, have the nurse give you a hand with it so you will not have to break the news to her and that way you don't stress out...

My advice would be to keep her feeling involved and important. Give her a task outside the room, like keeping the rest of the folks in the waiting area under control and happy. This way she will feel like she's helping and thought of while you are comfortable and unpressured.

I am dealing with this as well.  My best friend is very self centered and selfish and wants to make everything about her.  I told her this morning, flat out, that it will only be my DH, mother in law, and my sister in the room for the birth.  Told her she was more then welcome in there during labor but for the birth she would be asked to step out of the room.  She threw a huge fit and hung up on me.  The way I see it is, the day of your birth is about you, the new baby and your DH.  A TRUE friend will understand why you wish for it to be personal experience and if she doesn't, well then forget her.  Focus on you and your growing family.

The nurses are always more than happy to be the bad guys in these situations. Seriously, I went through transition and the nice nurse escorted my mom from the room: "Trust me, you don't want to see your baby go through this." And my mom is an RN. 

Honestly, it would be best if she didn't have to get all the way to the hospital to be told that she's not allowed in, but if she's the type I'm thinking of, your other option is to make your DH the bad guy. He just kinda forgot to call her. Oops. He called the doctor and your mom, grabbed your bag, and got out the door. Your labor was a little distracting. And then the baby arrived. Shucks, it all went by so fast. ;)

If you don't want to confront it personally because you are scared to hurt her feelings, tell the nurse you only want your husband and mom in the room and ask her to say only two people are aloud in the room.

Or just let her know somewhere privately that you love her and her friendship but this experience is extremely  personally and you just want your mother and husband with you. tell her she can be one of the first people to come and see you and your new little one (I told that to one of my friends who was upset they werent in  the room and they ended up not coming in until like five people later but they were so happy for me and to see my baby they didnt bring it up)

I am due in November and I asked my mom how I was supposed to tell people I don't want them in the room during labor and she told me to say that the doctor recommended I have only (insert your number choice) people in the room. I only want my boyfriend and mom so im telling eveyone only two people can be in the room and who those two people are! solves a lot of problems! (:

I am expecting a baby boy in July, along with the basic concerns such as medication, pain, complications I am feeling some anxiety about who will be in the room with me. I would prefer to just have my Husband and Mom the entire time, however, I have a friend who keeps asking "who do you want in the room with you..?"  I keep changing the subject as to not hurt her feelings because when her sister had her son she was very angery that she wasn't allowed in the room during delivery, and made her sister feel terrible the whole time afterwards.

We have been friends for a long time, but she is very tempermental and demanding of my attention. I want her to feel involved but I don't need the stress of her being in the room with me.

I only wanted my baby's daddy to be with me, even though HIS mother wanted to be there. I flat out told everyone who asked that I only wanted my fiance to be in the room with me. The room wasn't huge anyways and I think I could of only had two guests with anyways. It was just the doctor, my nurse, my baby's nurse, fiance, myself, and when the time came, our son as well. My mother, father, aunt, and fiance's mother were crowding the door though! My family had to tell my fiance's mother to chill out and sit in the waiting room lol. I was very thankful about that. I must mention that she is a very stubborn woman who doesn't like being told what to do. It was my fiance's day and my day, nobody else's. However, my son's cousin was born exactly three weeks later and grandma, of my son and my fiance's brother's son, stayed there waiting for baby to be born just a few days after mine was. She was in the room for that birth, whether or not the momma wanted her to be there, but I think her son did. Anyways, my point is, don't be afraid to be honest. That shows that you are capable of making your own decisions and that you don't care what people think!

I talked to my doctor and she told me she would be the bad guy for me if necessary.  I only wanted my husband in the delivery room - not even my Mom or sister were allowed in because I didn't want to have to be thinking about how they were feeling about seeing me go through labor and eventual c-section delivery (both of my deliveries ended up as c-sections - first one wasn't planned that way).  Talk to your doctor - he/she would probably do the same for you.
