So I will soon be having a beautiful little girl. I am trying to deside meds or natural delivery have hurd natural is not as bad as some people make it out to be. Have also hurd that epidural can be very painful an have side affects??? Still undesided...HELP!.
Speaking as someone who has only given birth with the use of an epidural, I say get one! I had to be induced because my water had broken but I was not progressing at all. After a while the contractions were gettng to hard to handle and I still was not progressing, still only at 1 cm (which I was at a week before giving birth). The doctor agreed to give me the epidural and after that it was smooth sailing. Jack was born 4.5 hours later!
I have had only natural births with both of my kids and will be having a natural birth with this one. I think it all depends on your pain tolerance. But to me it wasen't as hard as the say on tv or other people like I say it's your pain tolerance and what you can handle. Good Luck on what ever you choose.
Walking epidural. I wouldn't do it any other way. I tried natural to start. That lasted about 30 minutes before the pain was unbearable. I was progressing fast, so no need for the long term epidural. Intrathecal (aka walking epidural) is one quick shot and instant 2 hour pain relief. I was ready to push right when it wore off and less than 5 minutes later he was born.
I am due in November and I am planning to have an all natural. I hope everything goes well for you with whatever way you choose. Please post on what you chose to do and how it went. =) It would be very helpful for soon to be mommies. =)

I agree with you that it depends on your pain tolerance.
I wish i would of had my son naturally. I was in labor for 33 hours and out of fear of the pain had an epidural 3 hours before he was born. My pain tolerance is really high. I slept through the first 30 hours and listened to music. I kept my music low enough that i had to concentrate to hear it and that helped me to get through contractions because i wasn't focusing on the pain but the music. If we are able to have another baby i will be going all natural because there are horrible side effects to an epidural and i do not want to experience them again.
I unfortunately was in the minority for side effects and ended up with an epidural migraine, but was discharged and told that i had just slept wrong. Two weeks later i was in the ER because i couldn't take the pain anymore. and told to take vicodin and to drink as much caffiene as possible.
I am scheduled to go in Sunday night at midnight and planning on going w a non epidural route. If the pain becomes to much i will take a pain reliever 1st before i have to get a epidural...Just want to wait and see how my body responds to labor before i make big decision
WOW I have never heard of that. I do NOT want medicine but I cannot tolerate pain AT ALL. Thanks for posting, I think that is something I may be able to look into. I hate being confined so being stuck in a bed with heavy legs looks grim to me.I personally wanted to experience everything seeing as this is my first baby, but I know my tolerance is a big fat 0 lol.
I have had both natural and meds. I have not had any side affects from the meds either. I would say if you take pain well then you should try natural that way you will know exactly what it feels like. I does hurt but it is nothing like people make it out to be. You also have to think about some peoples pain tolerence are different from others.
My birth plan was to do it all natural but that all changed. I have a very high pain tolerance but after 48 hours in labor and still no baby I went with the epidural. I just couldn't take it anymore. Turns out that my son was face up instead of down and he was stuck so I ended up having to have a c-section. That's another good reason to have an epidural. If something was to go wrong (Now I'm not saying that something will) you already have that in place and they don't have to put you completely to sleep if you do have a c-section. Also with my epidural, I could still move my legs I just couldn't feel the comtractions and I didn't have any side effects. It's hard to make that decision until you are in labor but however you decide to do it you will do great.

I have been debating on what I want to do when September comes. My local hospital where I will be giving birth does not offer a birthing tub so I either have to give birth naturally or with pain meds. I am wanting to just try it without pain meds just to see how much of the pain I can handle. I have discussed this option with my doctor and she told me that if I wanted to opt out and get pain meds then by all means do so.
i had all natural birth that is from labor pain to delivery,,,its so wonderful and amazing............In Response to natural or with meds? debate:

I had an epidural with my daughter but am wanting to try a natural birth with my son. I have done all my classes and signed the waiver and all that jazz just in case I change my mind about it. I would recommend that to anyone who is still undecided. Better to have everything in place in case you change your mind rather then not do it and change your mind and being told you're out of luck.

Because the drugs wore off just at I reached the pushing stage. I felt all the urges and pain of pushing. If it has lasted just a little longer, I would have felt the urges to push, just no pain. That would have been a heck of a lot nicer, but instead I just made sure to push him out fast so the pain didn't last any longer than it had to. The natural part of the birth both before and after the pain meds was not amazing or wonderful, it just totally sucked.
I wanted an epidural when I had my son, but I ran out of time so it ended up being a natural birth. It wasn't as bad or painful as I thought it was going to be. But I was in back labor for a day and a half and I only had to push for like thirty minutes and he was out. It really all depends on you, every labor is different, just as everyones pain tolerance.
I would suggest to wait as long as you can to get the epidural if you do decide to get one, so it will still have effect when you actually have to push.
