How do you keep baby and dad connected over thousands of miles?
I'm due to have a little boy (July 21st), and his dad is stationed in Hawii! We live in Michigan, and i'm really worried that they are going to lack a connection because they can't be together full-time until the baby is almost a year and a half old. We skype as much as possible, and my fiance talks to the baby (on speaker) as often as he can, which will continue after he's born, but i'm worried that that won't be enough.. anybody who's been there?
Re: How do you keep baby and dad connected over thousands of miles?
have him read books to him over skype and have dad send a dvd of him reading to him and talking to him that you can play over and over. My son is 4 months and will sit and watch a video of himself repeatedly if i didn't get tired of it and turn it off.

:) your welcome, also a picture book of dad, you can make them online and pick them up at walmart, walgreens, or snapfish sends them to you. they cost between 15-30 bucks, depending on size.

There are books I've noticed that they were selling on base that dad can record them reading the book. Every time the page is turned it is dad's voice reading the page. It's really neat.

Well being in the navy myself im not sure if ur fiancé is in the navy or not but the fathers get 10 days of maternity leave he can always request more days because he is so far away, unless he is getting ready for deployment then they have a palm period, he could be home for 14days or so. Try not to stress about it the military is very family oriented they can and will try to work with him
Re: How do you keep baby and dad connected over thousands of miles?
At first it's more important to make sure the baby's dad feels connected. There isn't too much you can do for the baby at such a young age. My husband is in the Navy and we have a 2 year old and a 1 month old (who he hasn't met yet) and he has been away for the majority of our 2 year old's life. I have his pictures everywhere in the house, I keep his covers (hats) out and let our daughter wear them so she can "be like daddy" and I talk to her about him all the time. To keep him connected I email him daily about everything the kids do, skype whenever possible, send pictures all the time and I make sure he is apart of every decision I make as a parent even though he is far away. Its important to make sure he feels like he is contributing to the children other than just financially. When the girls need new clothes we shop online for them together. If I need to research something like strollers or carseats I give the job to him so that he still feels like he is doing those "man of the house" type jobs. I'm not sure what the website is, but the USO offers free photo books to deployed spouses. I made one for my husband and he loved it. If he isn't deployed, shutterfly is having a sale right now where you can get a free one with a new account (: good luck!

The Hallmark recordable books are great. The videos are a fantastic idea and on base they havea few different books that you can actually have pictures of your spouse in. They have stuffed animals and such that you can put a picture of your hubby in and your child can sleep with it at night so they always feel like daady is watching over them

look on post to see if there is a USO..they do a united through reading program..the deployed solider gets to pick a book and they get video tape reading it to your child..the USO will then send the book and dvd to the child free of charge.
