Five Fun Ways to Welcome a New Year with Your Family
Author: Melanie Denney
5, 4, 3, 2, 1 … Happy New Year! Time flies by so unbelievably fast, making it hard to believe that the New Year is nearly here. Let’s celebrate the countdown with five fun things to do with our sweet little families.
FIVE Gifts of Kindness: Start the New Year with acts of compassion and kindness. Recruit your little ones to help put together five kits to pass out to people in need, whether it’s a homeless veteran sheltered under a overpass, or a family living in their car. Think of what you would need or want if you were in their shoes: deodorant, tooth paste, tooth brush, Chap Stick, lip gloss, food, nail clippers, wet wipes, socks, money, a blanket, a pillow, a few disposable razors, lotion, or a water bottle. Little kids love to make and give things to people, they will have fun looking for opportunities to give away the kits they put together.
FOUR Steps to a Magical Celebration: Children love floating balloons. Up the ante this year and bring in the new one with a glittery bang.
-
Step one: Get a tank of helium from your local party supply store.
Step two: Funnel confetti and glitter into balloons, many balloons.
Step three: Fill them with helium and tie them in bunches to a weighted object.
Step four: You know what to do. Every sparkly explosion will make a magical atmosphere, which your child will love.
THREE Fun Picnic Foods: Bundle your little family up in warm clothes and go on a New Years picnic with a cozy campfire. Roast chunks of a bell pepper and pre-cooked chicken on roasting sticks, and eat it with fire-toasted bread. Wrap up scoops of pie filling and cake mix in tin foil to make personal sized desserts. Heat up hot chocolate over the fire, ladle it into mugs, and then top it off with marshmallows, chunks of shaved chocolate, and crushed candy canes.
TWO Party Crackers: Two party crackers are better than one. Wrap a toilet paper tube, tootsie roll style, in some pretty printed paper. Tie one end of it with a ribbon; fill the tube with little candies, and then close up the other end. When the ball drops, shake them and break them!
ONE Family Time Capsule: If you have never put a time capsule together, you really should. Find an old storage container with a lid and decorate the outside. Gather pictures, articles, letters, your child’s artwork, a list of your favorite things, a list of cute things your kids have done or said, a homemade DVD of your family’s adventures, etc. Place everything in the container, seal it tightly, and put it away for a year. There is nothing more fun than opening your family’s time capsule the following year.
Make your celebration an event your kids will love and remember for many more years to come. Have the happiest New Year!
