Single Mother’s Guide to Potty Training Your Son
In our society, there is a distinct difference in the way women and men go the bathroom. For this reason, many women feel apprehensive when it comes to potty training a boy. Add to the fact that you are a single mom with no male example living in your home other than your son and you may feel helpless. Yet, moms potty train boys successfully everyday. The following tips will help you get your little man out of diapers and into the bathroom.
Readiness
Whether you are single or you have a partner, you have to look for the signs of readiness before you can potty train any child. Your child needs to stay dry for hours at a time, pull their own pants up and down, and have interest in the process. Without these signs you are likely wasting your time.
Prepare
To potty train any child you need a few things. You need a training potty and underwear. Plus, a reward is also helpful. Let your little man pick out his own underwear. Having their favorite character on them and picking them out helps build excitement for the process.
Commit
Potty training takes time and dedication. It doesn't happen overnight. Try planning to potty train when you have time off work or vacation time. Put the training potty in the bathroom, put him on the potty several times each day, and make him wear his underwear when he is awake. Whenever he goes in his potty give him a reward like a piece of candy.
Switch it up
When you start potty training your son, as a single mom you may be wondering how you will teach him to pee standing up. Once your little guy has mastered going to the bathroom sitting down you can start encouraging him to stand up. There are a number of training aids that can help you teach this concept like books, videos, and dolls. Don't forget to teach your son to wash his hands after he goes to the bathroom, to wipe himself, and to flush the toilet. These are all learned skills.
