Enjoying the Slow Moments During the Holidays
Author: Melanie Denney
Reflecting back on your childhood, what are your favorite holiday memories? Most of us remember feeling happy about everything, visiting family, going on drives to look at twinkle lights, or playing in the snow until our faces went numb (and the hand-me-down winter gear let us down – forcing us to the warmth of the indoors), drinking hot chocolate, eating cookies our mothers baked while watching us from the kitchen window, and having the hardest time settling down at night. Now in our busy adulthood, we often forget to notice the wonder of this time of year. It’s a shame really, because the most beautiful moments happen during the holidays, but often go unnoticed as we accomplish the holiday to-do list. Parties, entertaining, shopping, or preparing for the arrival of a baby, can keep us so busy that we forget to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.
As you’re out and about, doing the things on your to-do list, take time to notice how this time of year seems to bring out goodness and beauty in all things. People are more sensitive to the needs of others, offerings of kindness are more prevalent than ever, and decorations adorn streets and beautify homes. Sentimental memories have us longing to see family and friends, making it a priority to fit them into a busy schedule.
As this year’s holiday festivities begin, and while you look forward to the arrival of a new little life, take a moment to schedule in some slow time. Remember what you loved doing during the holidays when you were a child, then slow down to do it. Reflect on what you’re grateful for, and take opportunities to give to someone you do not know. Curl up on the sofa with the love of your life. Take a moment to marvel over the miraculous gift of your baby, or lose yourself in twinkle lights like you use to do. You never know when your last moment with your grandma will be, so steal a moment and spend it holding her hands while listening to her stories, so you can tell them to your baby. Stress builds so quickly while you’re running here and there, making this for that, and buying gifts. This holiday season, just find time to slow down and really enjoy this special time of year.
