Tuesday's Top 10 - List of Books for Mom
Do you love to read? I absolutely do and find that it is an awesome way to unwind after a busy day. When I was younger I could curl up with a good book and feel like I was truly in another world where nothing existed except for the book and I. Now, with four children, I find that I am lucky to get through a simple magazine article without being distracted or called upon to wipe someone's butt! Since time is now of the essence and you probably don't have as much of it to spend indulging in a book like you did before children, let alone picking one out to read, I have compiled this "Tuesday's Top 10" list of must-read books for mom. Next time you go to the beach, find yourself suffering from insomnia, or just want to read something that includes more than just "sight words" try one of these!
As a side note, I have found that quite often in life my hands have fallen on just the book that I needed at the moment. I have some books in my collection that I have had for years and have never opened knowing that when the time is right, I will. If you are drawn to a book for any reason chances are there is a message waiting inside of it just for you! The adage says, "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear!"
P.S. - These are listed in no specific order and I stayed away from "How-to Parenting" books because I am sure that you have plenty of those already on file! (If not, the general public is more than happy to help you out)
- Sara & Seth series by Esther Hicks. This book is a diamond in the rough and although it is classified as a children's book, it is anything but. I have read it numerous times and find that each time I open it I learn something new about life. I believe that this series should be a life requirement. The best part is it doesn't take long to read, which means you can squeeze it in between nap times.
- The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles. With an authored by name like "Wallace Wattles," it just has to be good. I came across this book through a freelance job and felt like it was meant for me. It was originally published in 1910 and is a tough read due to the language used, but it has been rewritten in modern times many, many times. It is not just about monetary gain, but also about living your own most authentic life.
- The Four Agreements by Miguel Ruiz. Definitely a great read when you are in the middle of raising children as the life lessons are classic and priceless!
- The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. Yes it's for children, but the truth is that the simplicity of this book is amazingly sweet and touching. I love this book and love reading it to my children.
- Oh, the Places You'll Go by the infamous Dr. Seuss. I love this story. An amazing friend gave it to me when she found out I was pregnant for the first time. I have realized since that the advice and wisdom in this poem/book is great for moms and even greater for moms to share with their children. (I know, I know another children's book.)
- The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. This book is actually the first of a series that I couldn't put down. The movie will be out soon, but I imagine that the book is twenty times better. I don't consider myself a "Sci-Fi" kind of girl, but was absolutely hooked with this mind-blowing thriller. Great escape from reality.
- The Girl Who Played With Men by Paulina Mielech. This was a sexy, fast-paced book that was so far from the reality I live in through motherhood that it had me hooked. Just make sure your children that are able to read don't get a hold of this one!
- Dare to Repair by Julie Sussman. I got ahold of this book when I was tired of waiting for my husband to rewire an outlet and hang a curtain rod in my house! It's designed for women and it definitely helps you to transcend gender roles so you can skip calling a contractor and fix the simple things yourself!
- If Women Ran the World S**t Would Get Done by Shelly Rachanow. A fantastic, inspiring, and funny book that will make you laugh and help you to feel good about yourself. This is a must read for women, especially those raising children.
- When Did I Get Like This?: The Screamer, the Worrier, the Dinosaur-Chicken-Nugget-Buyer, and Other Mothers I Swore I'd Never Be by Amy Wilson. Amy has a hilarious take on parenthood and mothering that will have you laughing your morning coffee through your nose. The best part is that the book is so "us" as moms! It's an eye-opener and reminds us not to take things so seriously and just relax and enjoy the crazy ride that is parenthood.
That about sums it up! At least for now, in six months I will have another "Top Ten" list of books for mothers. Share; what are your favorite books and WHY do you like them?
