Reality Stars

Saturday, November 19, 2011 by Heather Montgomery from Celebrity Stilettos and Sippy Cups

I am certainly guilty of watching the train wreck that was Jon and Kate + 8, as well as other ridiculous reality TV shows where children grow up in the limelight. As the world watched, this family was torn apart by the celebrity the show cast on them. I can’t imagine I would have wanted my poop, potty training, and other child antics to have been broadcast across the nation. I have to wonder what kind of damage the publicity and show has caused the children of Jon and Kate. What do you think?

On the other hand, we see the successful families in the limelight such as the Duggar’s. With the announcement recently that they are adding the 20th child to their family, they seem to be going strong. While some complain about the “Buddy” system the Duggar’s employ in their child care, at least on camera, the children seem well adjusted and loved. The celebrity has not seemed to damage their family in any way. So the thought that comes to my mind is, would each of these families have succeeded or failed regardless of the reality show? In my opinion, I think Jon and Kate had problems long before the reality show came into their lives. I think anyone can watch the first few episodes to see how rude and dismissive the two parents in the Gosselin family are to each other. On the other hand, Jim Bob and Michelle are loving and respectful of each other on the show.

What are your thoughts of reality families in general? Do you think they should be considered “celebrities” at all or are they just actors looking for ratings?
