“Newborn” Announcement of 13-Year-Old Adopted Son Goes Viral
Thursday, February 14th, 2013
Kelli Higgins and her husband adopted Latrell and his sister Chanya two years ago, when he was 10 and she was 5. The couple welcomed the children into their home and into their family. Kelli and her husband already had five biological children, and another one on the way, but she knew that she had more love to give and she wanted to give it to a child who might have a harder time being adopted because of his or her age.
Last month, Kelli, who is a professional photographer, was talking about an upcoming newborn photo shoot that she was going to do and Latrell mentioned that he really wished that he had baby photos of himself. I can imagine that was heartbreaking to hear for his mother, as they have no photos of him from his childhood. One of his sisters suggested to Kelli that she recreate a “newborn” announcement shoot with Latrell. The whole family had a good laugh but then Kelli thought, why not?
The next day, Kelli took Latrell into her studio and they recreated what could have been his newborn photos. They had a good time doing it, laughing the entire time. The photos are stunning but more importantly, the sentiment, the love that went into shooting those photos are apparent. The results are angelic photos of a 13-year-old boy, with soft lighting and an ethereal feel. The “birth” announcements are gorgeous and a tribute to his adoptive mother’s love for him and pride in being his mother.
Adopting children, who are not newborns or toddlers, isn’t as prevalent as those adoptions that take place when children are younger. I’ve never adopted a child but I think it might have something to do with parents wanting to raise the child as their own from a young age; to be there for all the firsts. Once the child is older, they come with preconceived notions, experiences, traumas, and maybe even the recollection of their biological parents; making it that much harder for you to be seriously considered as their “parent.”
Sadly, this leaves a lot of wonderful children who simply age out of foster care, without ever really getting a second chance at a family. Still, there are those parents who rise above the situation and adopt older children and give these children wonderful lives. It might take a little extra effort and time on everyone’s part but once you break through and you give that unconditional love, it’s a beautiful thing. It is giving a parent a child to love and a child a parent who will always be there for them; it is love and stability, something we all long for.
These photos have sparked a conversation about older adoption and they are shining a positive light on the entire experience. On the surface, it may seem funny or entertaining to do this shoot but at its core, Kelli and Latrell sharing his “newborn” shoot have inspired awareness and made a memory that will last a lifetime.
