Listeria Contamination Outbreak! Is Your Food Safe?

Friday, August 03, 2012 by Kim Shannon from Buzzworthy Bulletins

Just when I thought my anxieties couldn’t handle any additional worry, I read that “tons of ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook foods have been recalled because of listeria contamination at a California onion plant.”

“Major brands, such as Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, Whole Foods, and Publix,” are included in this recall.

I buy my groceries at Publix!

The FDA’s site has a list of all products to be concerned about – I’ve actually eaten one of these listed things (a Publix deli sandwich!!) recently – as well as which locations are affected.

Someone with a listeria infection may feel feverish, have muscle aches and diarrhea, and become nauseous, at first. Sometimes it takes up to two months before symptoms will occur.  If you are pregnant, you will probably only experience mild signs, but “the consequences for the baby, however, may be devastating.”

Check out the list of contaminated products. If you’ve eaten something on that list, or someone in your family has, keep watch for possible symptoms.

Fortunately, my state wasn’t listed as one of the contaminated Publix deli sites; however, I’m still on the verge of a mini panic attack. (Breathe in, breathe out. Repeat.) My daughter was recently sick (vomiting and diarrhea), and this article reminds me of how little I know about the foods I buy – both fresh and pre-packaged -  at grocery stores. I’ve always focused on buying healthy foods; but I haven’t focused on where those healthy foods have previously been. I wash the ones I’m supposed to wash before eating, but is that enough? Do you know where your fruit is coming from? Do you know how they processed that frozen pizza before it was packaged? Exactly what chemicals are you feeding yourself and your children?

Have you or any family members eaten something on this recall list? How aware are you of the foods you purchase?
