Get in a National Park Free Day!

Friday, September 23, 2011 by Kathy Murdock from Thrifty Mom's Two Cents

Looking for something fun to do with the family this weekend? How about visiting a nearby local national park. The cost can’t be beat: admittance is free!

We are always on the lookout for fun activities near the house. I love getting the kids outside on the weekends, wearing them out by running, playing, hiking, and being active. We always try to take advantage of these enter-the-park-free days when they come up a few times each year, too, since we can often see some very neat and interesting things, like alligators or old forts.

This Saturday, September 24th, the gates of over 100 national parks are opening up and offering free admittance. To find a national park near you visit http://www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm.

Want to have fun for free AND help out the environment and local parks? Go one step further and participate in this Saturday’s Public Lands Day. More than 180,000 people are expected to show up at national parks to work together to keep the parks clean. This is a great opportunity for not only getting out and having fun in the outdoors with the family, but for teaching children the importance of giving back. To find a location participating in Public Lands Day near you, visit http://www.publiclandsday.org.

If you head out this weekend, drop us a comment on Monday and share with us your great adventure!
