It is hard to imagine anyone with more strength and dedication than the Olympic athletes.
For filmmakers Jennifer Pottheiser and Danielle Elliot, the admiration took root in looking at thirteen fierce competitors who manage to balance their personal Olympic goals with the needs of their children and families. Working on the London 2012: Olympic Moms (Documentary Series) allowed them to profile and celebrate the amazing abilities these women have, not only in their sports, but in their lives.

Kids are never too young to learn manners. In fact, in a day and age when we are seeing more teenagers lacking in the manner department, it seems more important than ever that the parents of young kids start early in teaching their children how to interact with the world. The truth is your child will get further in life, and will be more respected by adults and playmates alike, if they learn manners.
Whenever I see a child without a clue about how to act in public, or how to interact with adults I immediately blame the parents. Very young children are not just developmentally ready, but eager to learn how to appropriately engage with others socially.

14-year-old Nadia Ilse is excited to no longer be called “Dumbo” or “elephant ears” by her classmates. She recently had plastic surgery to change her appearance, thanks to the Little Baby Face Foundation, a charity that helps children born with facial deformities.
She has been bullied since the first grade because of her ears and even “begged her mother at the age of 10 for an otoplasty – an operation to pin her ears back.”

Watching parents and their kiddos is mesmerizing. Some, I feel so "on the same page" with. I watch their joy at this outing, share their feelings of apprehension as their child gets on a ride for the first time, and I smile along with them with their child squeals with joy.
Then, there are those "other" parents. For a multitude of reasons, the festival just isn't fun.

Becoming a mother often means that you are thrown headfirst off a boat into a sea of criticism. Seriously, how many times have you been judged for a decision that you made in regard to your child? How many times have you been reminded that there is a different (perceived better) way to handle things by a well-meaning mother-in-law, or husband, or friend? How often do you feel less than perfect as you compare yourself to another mom? And how many times have you seen negative and derogatory comments posted online (or otherwise) in response to one mother’s way of doing something as opposed to another's?

When Camila McConaughey found out she and her husband Matthew McConaughey were expecting their third child she was happy, but also a little apprehensive. She had just signed on as the face of Macy’s I.N.C International Concepts. A week before the first photo shoot, she got the happy news of a new baby on the way.
Camila says, “I was over the moon, but my first reaction was that it was going to be a deal-breaker for the campaign — that they wouldn’t want a pregnant mom — but we worked it out.”

You realize when you are first introducing foods that your baby will probably be messy. Not that knowing that necessarily prepares you for the way they can spread a single spoonful of puree everywhere (How did he get prunes in his ear? Is this sweet potato between her toes?). What I wasn’t prepared for was that my children and foods would continue to be a challenge to my sensibilities. I’m not sure why I was in denial.

Facebook has definitely changed the way that each of us share. For mothers, Facebook makes it easy to never miss a birthday and to keep distant family members up to date with all of the happenings of the family without ever picking up the phone, worrying about ordering pictures, or buying stamps. How time effective is that? Plus, it gives each and every one of us an excuse to be on Facebook because we can always tell people that we are simply sharing our life story with family members.
The problem is that every single millisecond, there are gazillions of pictures being uploaded from computers, cameras, and phones to Facebook.

I am at my 6th month of pregnancy and have stayed home since then. I have and still go through a lot of emotions regarding my weight gain, appearance, skin, clothes and overall beauty. Everyone tells me that I need to take this time to rest and relax but when I get that itch for fun I can’t think of anything fun for me and this belly. Shopping is not my way of having fun btw. Are you thinking about enhancing your buttocks, breasts, hips, lips, or thighs?
The first thing you should know is if your doctor injects “bathroom caulk, cement, Super Glue, Fix-a-Flat [or] mineral oil” into your body, your doctor is not a doctor. Secondly, if your doctor uses super glue and cotton balls to seal your injection, you’ve made a very, very bad decision. Thirdly, if your injections become “hard and hot” and your skin turns black, pick up a phone immediately and dial 9-1-1 (you probably don’t have very long). And lastly, if your doctor didn’t charge very much for the procedures, came to your home, and went by the name “Dutchess,” I am writing a blog about you.

In less than two weeks, my youngest will be starting school for the first time. I have to admit that I am sort of excited about this; because it means that I will have the house (and my thoughts) to myself for the first time in almost 15 years (Yeah ME!).
But still, I have to admit that as we were buying school clothes and searching for her first backpack the other day - I had tiny pangs of sadness that ALL of my kids would be at school. It's as if one chapter of my mothering career has ended and a new one is beginning. I will have to redefine myself and the possibilities seem endless.

We’ve discussed the strange nature of Groupon deals before, but this one moved the bar from simply bizarre to truly disturbing. How disturbing? Try this part of the ad on for size: “Just like a triple backflip, performing a circumcision on oneself requires a lot of mental preparation, is very risky, and cannot easily be repeated.” Now leaving aside the issues of translation (which I’m assuming is the cause for the strangely worded: “performing a circumcision on oneself” – ouch, don’t do that!) this little snippet of salesmanship is one of the gems from an ad being offered via Groupon.

I posted last week about some great finds I got at TJ Maxx by shopping end of the season clearance racks. In the south, it stays hot well into October (and if you go further south, you can pretty much wear warm weather clothes year around). I like to shop end of season racks for deals since they put out the next season’s clothes long before the next season actually rolls around.
Today I’m sharing a few additional great deals available for those of you who are back to school shopping for clothes – and for those who just want to stock up on lower clothing prices (and possibly a great layaway deal for school supplies) while the going is good.

The title of the article immediately drew me in. After all, don’t we all want to give our kiddos the best shot at being bright young people?
Given that I had waited 13 years to become pregnant and then delivered the baby (via C-section) at 42 weeks, it was natural to be curious if this article had anything to do with either of my adventures.

NOISE! My home is filled with it. Lots of it. All the time. How about yours?
And I am not referring to the pitter patter of little feet. Because anyone that actually has children knows that nothing kids do sounds like a pitter patter. Kids sound more like elephants stomping on glassware while wielding hammers and nails.
I never really realized how noisy my home was until my husband was home on vacation. Apparently, I am completely unphased by the noise levels in my home because I am constantly surrounded by it. But for him, the NOISE of the children - which is literally NOISE - was almost too much to bear.

A 13-year-old attempts to save a 6-year-old’s life after the Colorado movie theatre massacre, and an 18-year-old boy provides real-time coverage of the shooting. And when one boy’s grandmother was about to get evicted, he helped to raise $10,500 in one month, so that the foster children living there would continue to have a home.
These children have an awareness for the world around them, plus a huge dose of courage and humanity.

Jay DeMarcus, bassist for Rascal Flatts, got a call that sent him into a panic last Friday. His wife, Allison, called him while he was prepping for a concert in Detroit to tell him their son, who was due in August, would be delivered that afternoon via C-section. He made it to the hospital in Nashville with about an hour to spare, but only got to hold his newborn son for 20 minutes before he had to jump back on a plane to get back to Detroit for the concert.

During my first pregnancy with twins, I kept a pregnancy journal. I have to admit that the journal gave me an amazing outlet to work through my pregnancy fears and anxieties and has since turned into one of my favorite pieces of memorabilia from my pregnancy.
Interestingly enough, the other day my twins (now 14) and I dragged out my pregnancy journal and reread all the things that I had written down. The girls laughed out loud about some of my prospective name choices for them while they were in utero, and were completely grossed out by the pictures of my HUGE belly.
In each section of the journal, there was a place for me to write down my pregnancy wishes and aspirations. And rereading, I noticed that in each place, for each given month, I pretty much recorded the same thing. The first thing I wished for was healthy babies that didn’t have to stay in the hospital after birth. And the second – sadly – was that I wouldn’t gain too much weight.

After the tragic, early morning massacre at “The Dark Knight Rises” premiere, the suspected shooter’s father, Robert Holmes, arrived in Colorado. He was the first person off of the plane, and “quickly ushered by law enforcement into an awaiting police van.” Robert was on his way to see his son, James, who is suspected to have killed 12 people and injured 59 others.
James’s mother, speaking on gut instinct, told ABC News, “You have the right person. I need to call the police … I need to fly out to Colorado.”
Did James’ parents know? Were there signs, symptoms, or a profile that they could’ve used to help prevent this horrible tragedy?

Would you allow your child to attend a virtual school? About 250,000 students were enrolled in virtual schools during the 2010-2011 school year and that number is increasing. So, what’s the pull?
There are many reasons to send your child to a virtual school. Some parents may choose this option “to accommodate a heavy schedule of extracurricular classes or special interests,” or “to accommodate a child’s health issues or family situation.” Other parents choose virtual schooling because they “believe their children’s needs are better served outside a traditional classroom.”

Give each child his or her own disposable camera and journal. It is their “assignment” to write down the activities at the end of the day, and what they liked most about them. When you get home, get the photos developed and make a family scrapbook using the journal pages and photos.

It never fails. Every single time I go to the store with my children, they WANT SOMETHING.
I can be in the feminine hygiene aisle of all places, looking for a bargain on female products, and lo and behold, at least one of my kids can magically spot something ridiculous that they swear they need in the fever of the moment. (Really?) Of course, I expect this from my youngest – but it isn’t just her that is prone to this irritating behavior.
The other day, I was in the sporting goods aisle looking for a pair of softball socks, and one of my daughters saw a fishing lure that she wanted. A fishing lure!? She doesn’t even fish. But she promised that it would ‘look cute’ hanging in her room.
Ummm…THE ANSWER IS NO!

Is there a collector at your house? I admit I am a collector. On my messiest days, my husband would call me a hoarder, but no television crews will be knocking on my door anytime soon. I just like things.
I’ve always been the sentimental type, so there are boxes in the closet filled with baby clothes that I just can’t bear to part with. One day, I’d like to make them into quilts for the kids, but first I’ll need to learn how to sew (or find someone else who can).

One of my daughter’s favorite movies is “Barbie in a Mermaid Tale.” When we go to the beach or pool, she skims atop the shallow water and pretends to be a mermaid princess. When I read this article, I saw how one mom took her daughter’s similar desires and created a reality: she designed a mermaid tail!
Monika Naumann’s company, 3-Fins, sells mermaid tails. “The tails come in shimmering shades of gold, blue, pink, green, and red, and there are even fins stuffed inside to make the look more, er, authentic.”

Lisa Kudrow and husband Michel Stern’s only child, Julian, does not want any siblings. According to Kudrow, her 14-year-old son has been saying no more siblings since he could talk.
“He doesn’t want siblings. Since he could talk he’d say, ‘No, no I don’t want a sister or a brother,’” the actress, 48, recalls. “Someone would get pregnant and he’d say, ‘But you’re not, right?’”

A lot of people connect with others online through social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, but these days companies are also using their social media pages to display coupons and recipes, which, in turn, they hope will attract readers.
Since I spend one day per week coupon clipping and menu writing, I’m always following links to printable coupons available from certain companies via their Facebook pages. ‘Like’ the company on Facebook and guess what? You might just get $1 off (or similar) and then regular updates on your Facebook page about new specials, recipes, and, of course, additional advertisements and posts.

The Today Show began investigating the company marketing Your Baby Can Read over two years ago. Today, if you go to the company’s website, you are greeted with a message informing customers “Regretfully, the cost of fighting recent legal issues has left us with no option but to cease business operations. While we vehemently deny any wrongdoing, and strongly believe in our products, the fight has drained our resources to the point where we can no longer continue operating.” I, for one, am glad to see them go.

We all have people that we admire. They might be famous, or they might be relatives. Someone told me once that the people we admire, and the people we think we dislike the most have the most to teach us about ourselves. This same person taught me that each of them holds a key to one of our own unanswered questions and that we truly decide how we feel about others based on them being a mirror for ourselves.

Parx Casino has something heavier than cards to deal with – in 2009, two former cocktail waitresses filed a lawsuit “claiming they were demoted when they became pregnant” – and the debate is still lingering.
As a rule, the casino’s cocktail waitresses and waiters, “Parkettes” and “Park Men,” are not allowed to gain or lose more than seven percent of their body weight from when they were hired. (This means that a woman weighing 130 pounds cannot gain or lose more than about 9 pounds total.)

Should Twins Be Dressed Alike?

As a mother of twins, I find it irritating every time I see twins out with their parents that are dressed completely alike.
There is a set of twins I know, that have grown up dressing like someone else (their sister) since the time they were born. And now, that they are in middle school – and still dressing alike under their mother’s orders, it is a bit CREEPY. Even worse, is the fact that the two girls admit that they have to decide TOGETHER every day which outfit they will wear. And they hate it!

This week I have my two kids plus an added bonus: my niece, who will be attending camp with my kids. I’m used to doing everything in twos: packing two lunches, buying two of whatever it is I’m purchasing so each child will have one, paying for two kids to bowl.
I’m not used to three. And while it may not seem like a big deal, when packing lunches for camp this morning I realized how quickly the costs can add up just by adding on another kid.

Ask my daughter, Lorelei, what she looked like as a baby and she will proudly inform you that she was “a bald-headed alien.” Why, you ask, would my sweet little four-year-old refer to herself that way? Well, that was how her parents referred to her for the first two years or so of her life, so I guess it is unsurprising.

Kelsey Grammer apparently likes the number five; he recently welcomed his fifth child with his fifth wife, Kayte Walsh. While earlier this year Grammer announced his wife was expecting twins, the couple said in a statement today that the twin boy died in utero shortly after the announcement was made.
The surviving baby, a girl named Faith Evangeline Elisa Grammer, was born early Friday morning.

Everyone loves summer.
As July has reared its hot and muggy head here in the beautiful state of Georgia, the pattern of afternoon thunderstorms is beginning to emerge. Nearly every day, we can count on some sort of monumental electrifying storm with rumbling thunder and clouds that shake the house to suddenly chase us indoors.
Of course, as the dangerous storms begin to scatter across the state - the television and radio become a constant reminder of the lurking danger of these storms. Warnings to take cover and seek shelter, along with the occasional tornado sirens going off in the distance cause my children several hours of anxiety.

“Eight-year-old Raven Blanco died after her dentist, Dr. Michael Hechtkopf, gave her ‘three times the average range’ of sedatives, according to the Virginia Board of Dentistry.”

I’ve become one of those shoppers. You know, the one who heads back to the store with a bag in hand, makes a beeline for customer service and then complains about something I’ve purchased that is broken, ruined or otherwise unusable.
I never was like this. In the past, in my younger years, I would have shrugged it off (unless it was a really expensive item) and said, “Oh well, so I eat that dollar.”
Of course, back then it didn’t seem to happen as often as it does now.

In all honesty, when I first saw this story pop up in my feed, I thought it must be a joke. It isn’t.
Apparently more and more people are seeking out podiatrists, for elective surgery to treat their – as Dr. Oliver Zong calls it – “toe-besity.” Yes, plastic surgery on their feet. Apparently, the need for cute toes and the ability to fit into uncomfortable high-heeled shoes is worth the thousands of dollars in costs; plus the risks of “anesthesia, infection, deformity of the toe if the surgery is not done right, a risk of reoccurrence and the risk of surgery in general,” as outlined by podiatrist Dr. Hillary Brenner.

If someone would have told me that I would be changing 3,000 diapers during that first year, I'm not sure I would have enthusiastically signed up for this journey called parenthood.
3,000 diapers? Yes, it's true. If you are just beginning this journey, that IS the fact. Estimates are, you will be changing 3,000 diapers during your baby's first year.
That is a lot of diapers. And, that is a lot of poop (luckily, you'll see more pee than poop which is often a bit easier to "handle").

My kids and I were shopping in our favorite store the other day, scoping out the racks in our triple-seater red cart, when we rounded the corner to see an entire section devoted to school supplies. My first reaction was “Already?” But I started thinking about how much planning I spent last year in preparing for kindergarten, and it starts to seem late.
I used to kind of laugh at the entire notion of people camping out to get a spot in a school or obsessing over their children’s preschool program. Then I got to that stage with my first, and I suddenly understood a whole lot more.

When Time Magazine featured moms who breastfeed their toddlers as its cover story in May, a lot of debate was kicked up – enough to spawn a new Extreme Parenting reality show. According to this article, “Extreme Parenting will look at a range of America’s kookiest parenting rituals, shedding a spotlight further on the much-hyped arguments for and against weaning your child after the age of one.”
The show will cover more than the attachment parenting method; the president of Collins Avenue Productions, who is developing the show, said, “We’ve discovered people are raising kids in all kinds of un-traditional ways these days and some people find their methods to be extreme.”

With all the reports on Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s divorce taking over every gossip headline, there is one theme that seems present in every article, Scientology. Tom has been a large proponent of Scientology and in the beginning of their marriage it seemed as if Katie also embraced the religion. In a June 2005 article Katie confirmed she was converting and Tom says “Yeah, absolutely. She digs it.” when asked about her conversion. After the interview with W magazine, news of the odd interview leaked. Apparently, Holmes was chaperoned by a Scientology representative who fed her lines and approved everything she said. In this interview Holmes gushed about Tom and said that the reports that she was being controlled were unfounded, saying, "That's really ludicrous because, I mean, you have to know Tom. He is the most loving, generous man who… first of all, he wants to help people. He doesn't put pressure on people. He is the kindest, smartest, most adoring man. It's a pleasure and a privilege to be with him."
