Today marks three years since my life changed completely. Not since the births of my children, although those are other days that have had the same affect. Not since my wedding day, another day that altered my view of everything. Today is three years since my brother, James, died.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Split
Saturday, June 30, 2012 by Heather Montgomery
It is the news that was probably not shocking to most people; Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing. According to reports, Katie filed the papers and Tom was surprised at the filing. The couple has one child, Suri, who is 6 years old. Katie’s team said this in a statement, "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." Tom’s representative adds, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."

Family Channel Friday: From Your Family to Ours
Friday, June 29, 2012 by Sara McTigue
Today’s tip comes to us courtesy of the Military Families forum. EF member Brittney asked, How do you keep baby and dad connected over thousands of miles?
I'm due to have a little boy (July 21st), and his dad is stationed in Hawaii! We live in Michigan, and I'm really worried that they are going to lack a connection because they can't be together full-time until the baby is almost a year and a half old. We skype as much as possible, and my fiancé talks to the baby (on speaker) as often as he can, which will continue after he's born, but I'm worried that that won't be enough.. anybody who's been there?
Over 1 Million U.S. Students Are Homeless
Friday, June 29, 2012 by Kim Shannon
Diane Nilan sold her house, bought a Gulfstream motor home, and drove 148,000 miles, talking to homeless families in about 30 states along the way. She met a boy who had been abandoned by his mother, and numerous children who lived at campsites and shelters. According to this article, Nilan heard the same story over and over again from the families: “Lost their job, had some medical problems, things fell apart, boom, boom, boom. Now they’re living in shelters or motels.”
The Department of Education released a report this week, stating that “for the first time, the number of homeless students in America topped one million by the end of the 2010-2011 school year … 1,065,794 homeless kids were enrolled in schools in the 2010-2011 school year.”

Summer Fun on a Shoestring Budget
Friday, June 29, 2012 by Kathy Murdock
This week, my oldest journeyed off to Girl Scout camp (and what a fabulous time she’s had!) and my youngest and I had mommy and daughter time. Flying solo was great. It’s rare I get to spend chunks of time with just one child at a time. I let my daughter navigate the week – choosing what we did and on which day, except for the scheduled see-the-live-animals at the library event. I gave her ideas, of course; things that wouldn’t bust the bank. And for under $20 we had a fabulous five days.

As part of their growth and development, many parents enroll their children in sports programs. Although there are those few who become professional athletes, for most kids playing a sport is a great way to get exercise, strengthen friendships, and learn good sportsmanship. Unless you are on Martin Tremblay’s team.

When it comes to your little one's development, is there an age and stage you miss most?
It hit me tonight. My little one is not so little anymore. In fact, I miss her earliest days.
Pregnancy. I held on to every moment. I lucked out and felt great for most of the journey. I devoured pineapple and made a few more trips than I should have to the local ice cream stand. After all, it was for a good reason - lol! I couldn't wait for my next doctor's appointment and hearing the sound of her heartbeat. I loved watching my belly grow, passing the point where I could no longer see my toes. Seeing my stomach bounce around due to her kicks and hits is one of the things I miss the most.
Then, "Wham!," she arrived. All of a sudden, I held her. She held on to my finger. She was strong. I was weak in the knees with overwhelming thoughts of caring for her and doing everything right. We both survived just fine. Oh, and that first smile. Better yet, her first laugh. I thought nothing could get better than those moments.
But it did.

Late summer days mark the unofficial start of BBQ season. I love grilling outside – we get to enjoy the backyard, and there’s less mess to clean up in the kitchen! Whether you’re making meat, fish, chicken, or veggies, there are lots of great ready-made marinades that add wonderful flavors to the main dish. Remember to marinate in the refrigerator, and not at room temperature. Always marinate in a non-reactive container, such as ceramic or glass, rather than aluminum. After marinating meat, seafood or poultry, discard the marinade.
Scientists Use MRI to Record Human Childbirth
Wednesday, June 27, 2012 by Kim Shannon
For the first time ever, a live birth was observed with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine as part of a study of how the mother’s pelvis interacts with the fetus during birth; and although this birth took place in 2010, the video was recently made public. Berlin researchers recorded “the active second stage of labor, when the mother starts performing expulsive efforts with the valsalva maneuver.”
I found the video to be educational; however, I’ve decided that this “valsalva maneuver” looks much too easy when displayed in radio-waved, magnetic mode. You can see two visible pushes, first at the 4-second mark and then the final, victorious push at the 22-second mark.
I would give my left boob for a two-push childbirth experience.
Learning to Spit (and Other Milestones)
Wednesday, June 27, 2012 by Sara McTigue
I had a request from my daughter today. She wanted me to blog about the kids spitting out their toothpaste. She has a vague idea about what I do, and that people sometimes read what I write (including her grandmother – Hi Geegee!) and was hoping for a little extra recognition. So, I said yes. And then thought to myself, “How do I blog about the kids spitting out their toothpaste?”
Before I confuse you too much, let me explain. My children are not particularly good at spitting. (Or nose-blowing, but that’s an entirely different topic.) Up until yesterday they were still using the training toothpaste because they would brush and then immediately swallow and I didn’t want them getting sick. But we were running out, and in the toothpaste aisle I spotted Superman toothpaste – with fluoride. It was so much cooler than the Little Bear training goo we’d been using (sorry Little Bear) that I had to give it a try. And this time it worked.
Giuliana and Bill Rancic Plan for a Traditional Baby Name
Wednesday, June 27, 2012 by Heather Montgomery
After recently revealing that they are expecting a boy via gestational surrogate, the couple also revealed that they are leaning toward a more traditional baby name. They say, “We’re going for traditional but not commonly used. None of those Hollywood names. It won’t be anything like Stereo System or Flag.” There is some speculation that they are leaning towards a form of Edward as the name has some significance for both Giuliana and Bill.
I talked about weird baby names in one of my first blogs here. I cannot understand the need to name your child Diva Muffin or some other ridiculous name. While it may be funny or cute, I don’t think most parents think about the fact that your child is stuck with the name for life.
Welcome to the New World of Couponing
Wednesday, June 27, 2012 by Kathy Murdock
So today I did something I have never done before – I went into Michael’s without a coupon. (They didn’t have one in this week’s flyer; trust me, I checked.)
But this was not the news.
I put a large canvas in my cart, so I can paint a picture for my daughter’s room – and it wasn't on sale.
But this was not the news (though I hate paying full price for anything).
I pulled up Michaels on my phone, I located a coupon for $5 off of $25 and I asked the cashier to scan the coupon at the cash register during checkout.
Can you say cha-ching?

Were you aware that California is the only state with legislation that allows sunscreen application at school without a doctor’s note? A mother in Tacoma, Washington found out about the restriction when two of her children returned home after a school field day with severe sunburns. After writing about the incident on her blog, the story was picked up by various news outlets, raising some questions about responsibility and school policy.
On one side, there are those who are focusing their ire at the mother, questioning why she wasn’t sending her kids coated in sunscreen (it was raining), with hats (not allowed in school), or taking other precautions (she’d never had a similar issue before). Then there are those that blame the children, suggesting that they should have known to remove themselves from the activities. Finally there are those who are frustrated with the school, suggesting that the policies have gone so far as to remove the common sense aspect of caring for students.

The summer sun is our cue to watch out for sunburn! Although everyone is at risk, those with light skin color, light hair or eye color, a family history of skin cancer, chronic sun exposure, or freckles are especially susceptible to the rays of the sun. But there is a lot we can do to protect ourselves.
Wear sunscreen! Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapplied at least every two hours. It is best to use water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Sunscreen is formulated to protect the skin against the sun’s ultraviolet light (UV), not to help the skin tan. Along with sunscreen, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends wearing wide brim hats and seeking shade under a beach umbrella or a tree. And sunglasses are important, too! Sunglasses protect our eyes from the bright light of the sun and they also protect the sensitive skin around the eyes.
Judge Ordered Valerie Bruno to Cut Off Daughter’s Ponytail for Lighter Sentence
Monday, June 25, 2012 by Kim Shannon
Valerie Bruno’s 13-year-old daughter, Kaytlen Lopan, received a haircut in court as part of her punishment for chopping off several inches of a 3-year-old girl’s long hair in a McDonald’s last March. Now, Bruno is filing a formal complaint, saying she felt intimidated by the judge.
Lopan, who was charged with assault, did not know the victim beforehand, but befriended her and then cut her hair off. According to the Huffington Post, Lopan “also admitted to charges related to making eight months of harassing phone calls to a Colorado teenager. The phone calls included threats of mutilation and rape.”
Cheers! New Info on Alcohol for Pregnant and Nursing Moms
Monday, June 25, 2012 by Jeannie Fleming-Gifford
Do you enjoy an alcoholic beverage now and then? How about when you are pregnant or nursing? My sister had quite the challenge conceiving her second child. After rounds of tests revealed nothing, she tried simplifying her life and de-stressing. One such tactic involved a trip to the seaside for some fun in the sun. I was lucky enough to accompany her on this adventure and can verify she definitely had fun and soaked in some sun. The fun involved not only hanging out with the coolest sister in the world (ahem, that is me! lol), but also having a few adult beverages. A week or so after arriving home, she got the news she had been hoping for - she was pregnant. She was ecstatic, but quickly became worried about her consumption of alcohol during that recent trip. Fortunately, all turned out fine. Her daughter was born healthy and has grown into smart, happy little lady. While it is often thought to be taboo for a pregnant or nursing mama to drink alcohol, should we be so concerned?

Diem Brown Plans to Have Her Eggs Frozen as She Faces a Second Diagnosis of Ovarian Cancer
Saturday, June 23, 2012 by Heather Montgomery
Diem Brown has been a member of the Real World/Road Rules Challenge enterprise since appearing on the 12th season Fresh Meat. She was first diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at the age of 22; she beat that diagnosis, after the removal of one ovary, and went on to live her life. However, recently after an ovarian cyst was removed she found that the cancer had come back to infect her remaining ovary. As she faces the removal of her final ovary, Brown has decided to take a drastic medical chance, harvesting eggs from her remaining ovary and freezing them for future use. "I know the risks I might be taking with hormone shots as a current ovarian cancer patient. But for my own sanity I just want to have something 'normal' before going through this cancer journey once again. For me something 'normal' is having my eggs in a freezer somewhere or knowing in my heart I have exhausted every fertility preservation option possible,” Brown told People in an exclusive interview.

I grew up with a younger brother and sister who were alternately fun to play with and a total pain to deal with, as it often goes with siblings. But once we were older, we found true friendship in one another. I saw the same play out with my mother and her sisters and my cousins and their siblings. As we grew up, it became clearer that these people that you’ve grown up with, shared a home and a life with, are the people that help define who you are. When it came time to begin my own family, I knew what I wanted for my children – the same blend of annoying and amazing that I had in my own siblings.

Technology is a great thing. Texting, smart phones, iPads and all the other amazing tools that we utilize today definitely make keeping in touch and communicating easier.
At the same time, I feel on many levels that all of this instant access to other people and places, to Facebook and Twitter and our email accounts makes us less available and less respectful to the people we are actually with.
How many times have you been behind someone in line who is so busy texting that they are taking time away from YOUR day? Or, those people so involved with their phones in the car that they are a safety hazard? How many times have you been having a conversation with a friend, sitting down at the dinner table, or talking to someone in public only to have the conversation completely interrupted by a ding, beep, whistle, or song that lets this person know they have an incoming call or text?

"It's time to stop fooling ourselves, says a woman who left a position of power: the women who have managed to be both mothers and top professionals are superhuman, rich, or self-employed. If we truly believe in equal opportunity for all women, here’s what has to change."
The above statement is the introduction for an article written by a woman whose position and career path are so influential that her words may actually make an impression upon our society. Anne-Marie Slaughter wrote "Why Women Still Can't Have It All" after accepting her foreign-policy dream job three years ago, working as the first woman director of policy planning at the State Department, and then leaving it after two years, because of her desire to be with her family and her realization – juggling a high-powered job didn’t mesh very well with raising two teenage boys.

Low Cost Dinner Ideas for a Group
Friday, June 22, 2012 by Kathy Murdock
I posted last month about our upcoming big summer party bash. We’ll be hosting a weekend of fun for ten people total, all of whom will be staying with us and who will be eating breakfast, lunch and dinner in our home. I always get a little nervous about cooking for that many people: making sure I have enough to cover each person’s meal, thinking of meals that will be easy (or as easy as they can be for that many people), and, of course, cooking to keep the cost low but the taste high.
I asked you to let me know of any good recipes you might use for a group of people, and I have done some researching on my own. Here, a few ideas for meals that will feed an army (or at least a family reunion gathering of ten!) while keeping the cost down.
Think frozen pizza. We buy frozen pizza when on sale. Lately, I’ve been able to get Freschetta at buy one, get one free, and they always have coupons in the flyers. I spend about $3 per pizza (sometimes a bit less) and I buy four or six of them and store them in the freezer so I don’t have to buy more until the next sale.

Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high
For 26 years, children sang along to the theme song of Reading Rainbow as they viewed a television show that encouraged them to find adventures in reading. At the time the show began, reaching kids through tv was the best option. As host LeVar Burton observes, the kids were sitting in front of the screen, "[s]o we went where they were to steer them back in the direction of where we wanted them to go." Along with other long-running series Sesame Street and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, the program was intended to provide quality, educational options for children.

I don't think that any of us truly realize, or give ourselves credit for how much time, energy and effort go in to taking care of a family.
I can remember being young and wondering why my own mother was always moving, always doing something. My brother and I would be lounging around on the couch wondering what the heck was wrong with her. Seriously, couldn't she sit down for a minute?
Like most things in life, my understanding came full circle, as I became a mother. During the day, it seems like there just aren’t enough hours. Not doing today's laundry or today's chores only leads to an excess tomorrow. It's the snowball effect. And truth be told, in order to run a home efficiently, keep everyone happy and healthy – there is a massive list of things to do. Simple, often menial, sometimes annoying, things to do.

Has your child ever been invited to be in a wedding?...

What would be your response if a good friend playfully remarked that your toddler has a lot of "junk in their trunk?"
My response? Say nothing and then avoid them for weeks. Finally, confess how much this remark hurt your feelings. Finally, forgive and become friends again.
And that is my story. My daughter was merely eighteen months of age. She was perfect. At least I thought so. I was riding with a friend and we were casually talking about our girls. Her daughter was exactly the same age. We were talking about their growth and comparing notes. That is when the remark came: "Ella sure has a lot of junk in her trunk."
I was dumbfounded. WHAT?! Then, I was angry. I ended that conversation quietly and continued my silence with that friend for weeks to come. It was only after she cornered me in the neighborhood that I disclosed how hurtful that comment had been. She was sincerely sorry and, with her trunk never containing any amount of "junk," thought the remark to be a compliment of my daughter's little round tush.
Recently, my daughter was seen by her pediatrician for a routine check-up. At the end of the appointment, the pediatrician remarked how "nicely Ella has evened out..." WHAT?! She went on to explain that as she has been monitoring the growth of my daughter, she was keeping a close eye on her BMI, or in other words, her body fatness. The good news is that her BMI was now right where it was supposed to be.

Cost of Raising Kids Rises: Did it Affect Your Decision in Having Children?

Sunday, June 17, 2012 by Stef Daniel
When I look back on my childhood, there is one thing that stands out strongly above all of my memories. That one thing - or person should I say – is my father. I honestly believe that I have the world’s greatest father, and not just because he and I share DNA. My father was a police officer. I can remember wearin...

When is Your Daughter Old Enough To Wear Make-up?
Saturday, June 16, 2012 by Stef Daniel
A few weeks ago, I had kindergarten registration with my 5 year old. As we were preparing to go, I was shocked and horrified (and somewhat amused, I admit) to see her emerge from the bathroom covered in mascara, eye shadow, blush and lipstick. Of course, she decided to ‘put on her makeup’ when we had to be somewhere a...

When Malika Saada Saar recently attended her daughter’s second grade school dance recital, she noticed that the third and fourth grade classes performed dances that sexualized the 8- and 9-year-old girls. They “were dressed in short shorts and tight halter tops, shaking butts and breasts they did not have.” Saar, Director of...

Father's Day on a Dime (But Priceless, of Course!)
Friday, June 15, 2012 by Kathy Murdock
This year, Father’s Day snuck up on me. Between the end of school, my daughter’s birthday, and a large family gathering at our home this week, I forgot the special day tucked at the end of this week. This means, of course, I haven’t taken the time to gift shop. My husband and I always do something nice for each other on s...

Is Infidelity a Deal Breaker for You?
Thursday, June 14, 2012 by Stef Daniel
When gathering information about infidelity, it is difficult to get a realistic grasp on how widespread cheating is. Why? Because obviously most people aren’t honest about infidelity, even when they are caught red handed. And although men seem to have to the reputation for cheating – the truth is that both men and wom...

What is your favorite memory from your first month as a mom?...
Thursday, June 14, 2012 by Jeannie Fleming-Gifford
Don't tell my husband, but I really didn't think I needed him. We were married a good long time before jumping into the adventure called parenthood. I had plenty of experience with little ones as well as a degree in early childhood and felt I knew exactly what I was doing. When it came to having a baby and raising a child, I was read...
Minivan: Nightmare or Dream Come True?

My car has three car seats strapped in the back. Peeking under those seats will score you Matchbox cars, fossilized French fries, and a variety of single, dirty socks. My car has a school spirit magnet on the back and an emergency potty, antibacterial spray, and extra underpants inside. My car has auto-sliding doors, a light indicating that it need...

Dollar Stores: Do You Shop Them for Everyday Grocery Items?
Wednesday, June 13, 2012 by Kathy Murdock
Because I use coupons with sales, I often get staples- ketchup, sauces, dressings, pasta, spaghetti, shampoo, toothpaste – for a dollar or less. For this reason, I rarely stop in the dollar stores in our area to purchase grocery type items. Lately, though, I’ve been popping in for other items – my daughter’s birthday party ...
Using LATCH? Is Your Seat Safe?
Tuesday, June 12, 2012 by Sara McTigue
Did you know that the LATCH system in vehicles should not be used past a certain weight limit? The exact number has been left to each vehicle and seat manufacturer to determine, making for a somewhat confusing grey area. This means that each car seat and each car might designate different limits, and you would need to know the limits for each car t...

However, the other day, looking at some pictures of myself, pre-children –...

Facebook Friends. With Children?
Monday, June 11, 2012 by Stef Daniel
I realize that the ‘legal’ age for Facebook is 13. But I also realize that there are lots and lots of children on Facebook who are nowhere near 13. Most recently, I knew one crazy mama who created a Facebook page for her 4 year old. The poor kid cannot write a complete sentence yet, (or read for that matter) but has a Facebook...
